Nicklas Backstrom dreamed about the road less traveled.
Driving down Constitution Avenue on his way to each home game since his NHL debut in 2007 Denzel Ward Jersey Browns , he imagined the street lined with overjoyed Washington Capitals fans.
”It always popped up in my head that one time we’re going to have a parade here, and finally that day is here,” Backstrom said.
It all becomes reality Tuesday when Backstrom and the Stanley Cup-champion Capitals give the city its first parade for a major pro sports team since the NFL’s Redskins in 1992. The parade is 26 years in the making for Washington sports fans who endured long, lean years of heartbreak.
”I don’t think anyone doubted what this city would do,” longtime Nationals infielder Ryan Zimmerman said. ”It’s just a matter of getting there and having the ability to do it. They definitely held up their end of the bargain.”
Tens of thousands gathered for viewing parties of road playoff games on the way to the Capitals’ first championship since beginning play in 1974. They camped out on the streets to watch on giant video screens – the kinds of scenes more germane to presidential inaugurations in this town than sporting events.
”I thought it was really cool when we were even at home and everyone was outside and going nuts and they would show that right after we would score a goal,” defenseman John Carlson said. ”I think that was probably one of the coolest moments of the playoffs for me and just seeing the support. … I think we deserve it, and so do the fans.”
It has been a long time coming. Since the Redskins won the Super Bowl in January 1992, the 1998 Capitals were the only Washington team in the NHL, NBA, NFL or Major League Baseball to reach a league semifinal until this spring, a drought of 74 combined seasons without a championship.
When the Capitals took the Cup into the Nationals’ clubhouse on Saturday, coach Barry Trotz wanted players to know: ”There’s no curse or anything. It’s all gone.” All they had to do to know that was look around the past two months to see the doubt being chipped away.
Nationals manager Davey Martinez, who texted with Trotz throughout the run, got his first real taste of Washington sports in the playoffs with the Chicago Cubs last year when he came out of the dugout seeing 50 Authentic Hayden Hurst Jersey ,000 fans in red and couldn’t hear himself think because it was so loud.
”Right then and there I said, `Hey, these people, they’re in, they love it,”’ Martinez recalled. ”This is exciting. And the city then rallied this year around the Caps. I get it. It was awesome. It was good for the city. Good for us. I know our boys were all in, they were excited about everything. I told them yesterday, `Let’s just keep it rolling. The city’s all-in.”’
Washington isn’t a city accustomed to being all-in because of the scars of so many playoff failures over the years. Longtime Capitals season-ticket holder Jimmy Patterson said fans became reluctant to get together to watch games because the mood at the end of the night wasn’t something anyone wanted to endure in a group setting.
That’s part of what made the public gatherings for Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final and throughout the Stanley Cup Final so remarkable. Exorcising franchise-long demons by beating the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round seemed to free fans to actually enjoy themselves.
”It showed what they were capable of and shows if you get to that level, they’re going to match it or even step it up a little bit more than the actual players,” Zimmerman said.
Fans celebrating the Capitals beating the Penguins led ESPN’s Michael Wilbon – a former Washington Post columnist – to call D.C. a ”minor league sports town.” It’s not the first knock on Washington, though 14 years of playing baseball in the city has given Zimmerman some clarity on explaining that it’s not Boston, Chicago, New York or Philadelphia, and he doesn’t think it has to be.
”This is such an interesting city because not many people are from here Zack Martin Cowboys Jersey , so it’s hard to be a Boston or a Chicago,” Zimmerman said. ”That’s a generational sports town. So it’s nothing against (Washington). They shouldn’t be like that. They have no reason to be like that.
”A lot of these people move here for work in their early to mid-20s or come here even later than that and they adopt a team. This is what happens nowadays: Everyone compares everything. Just let it be. Let it be what it is. We have great fans and obviously if you make the playoffs and get to a Stanley Cup finals, you have really great fans just like any city would.”
Thousands of fans are expected to watch the parade, from 17th to 7th on Constitution. Trotz has been thinking about something like this since he arrived in 2014.
”You start thinking about, `Well, what would it mean?’ and then you think about a possible parade on one of the most famous streets in all the world, really, and it’s sort of now coming into play,” Trotz said. ”It’s going to come true.”

More Stanley Cup coverage: Even with temperatures in the mid-80s for the opening day of the Falcons rookie minicamp, wide receiver Calvin Ridley wore long sleeves under his red No. 18 jersey.
He just couldn't resist.
It's a freedom that was never allowed for skill position players in Ridley's college career under Alabama coach Nick Saban.
"Oh man, I didn't get to wear this in college so I had to do it," Ridley said. "Coach really didn't like us to wear long sleeves and I had to do it. I had to try."
As an NFL first-round draft pick , Ridley was enjoying some new-found flexibility during his first practice as a professional.
"I can have my shirt out a little bit," he said http://www.ramsauthorizedshops.com/authe...ers-jersey , holding the bottom of his jersey. "I don't have to tuck my shirt in."
Long sleeves? Shirt untucked?
Sorry coach Saban, but there's more.
At times on Friday, Ridley even took off his helmet.
"It's a little different to take my helmet off all the time," Ridley said, smiling while recalling his days under Saban's strict watch. "A little more freedom. It's cool, though."
Ridley may have felt like a rebel while catching passes in his first Falcons practice, but soon his old college rules will become a distant memory. The young wide receiver may quickly shed the long sleeves when the full Falcons roster is together for mandatory minicamp in June and training camp in July.
Besides, there are more important matters in Ridley's mind. He must learn the Falcons playbook as he tries to prove he can join veteran receivers Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanu as another top target for quarterback Matt Ryan .
On Friday, Ridley may have been too eager to show he can meet expectations that come with being a first-round draft pick.
Ridley acknowledged he was "just very excited" and may have tried to move too fast while running plays with other draft picks and 27 undrafted rookies participating in the camp.
On the first play following a water break, Ridley ran a crossing route over the middle and had the ball fall to the ground off his hands. He appeared to turn up field before securing the ball.
"I want to play fast and I've got to slow it down a little bit to learn better and get comfortable, and I'm going to be fine," he said.
Coach Dan Quinn said it's a common first-day scenario for rookies.
"Like most of the guys, they want to do right so well, they want more reps Ravens Robert Griffin III Jersey , more turns to get rolling," Quinn said. "It's a good lesson. Stay in the moment of this play. That's not uncommon for any of them."
The Falcons expect Ridley to make an immediate impact as another playmaker on an offense that suffered a decline in 2017 after leading the NFL in scoring in 2016. He finished his college career ranked second on the Alabama records, behind Amari Cooper, for catches and TD catches.
Ridley is the only unsigned player among Atlanta's six draft picks. He said he is leaving the contract negotiations to his agents.
"I'm just letting my people work," he said. "... I'm worried about football."
NOTES: Russell Gage, one of two sixth-round picks , was listed as a wide receiver in the NFL draft, but he worked at cornerback on Friday. "Just to make sure where we're going to put him," Quinn said. Gage played both positions at LSU and will move back to offense when the minicamp continues on Saturday. Quinn said he may work other players at more than one position.

Jason Licht says one valuable lesson he's learned in four years of running Tampa Bay's draft is to trust his instinct.
It worked well for the general manager when he selected Mike Evans No. 7 overall in 2014. And Will Hernandez Giants Jersey , he's confident the Buccaneers will land another impact player if the team stays put and picks seventh again this week.
"If there's a player that you really like and you feel very, very confident in, you shouldn't hesitate to take the player. Sometimes getting cute, moving back, can cost," Licht said.
"It goes back to how are you going to feel in bed at night after the first day, the second day? Are you going to feel good or are you going to feel bad that you passed an opportunity to take a guy that you really liked? ... Sometimes you can fall in love with a player too much, too, and mortgage your future and give up picks. We haven't done that, but I've restrained from doing that."
The Bucs addressed pressing needs to improve an anemic pass rush and bolster depth on the defensive line by trading for Jason Pierre-Paul and signing Beau Allen and Vinny Curry in free agency.
Nevertheless, Licht still has some holes to fill if Jameis Winston is going to lead the Bucs to their first playoff berth in more than a decade.
Minkah Fitzpatrick and Derwin James are highly regarded prospects Tampa Bay could consider for the seventh pick.
Marcus Davenport and tackle Vitea Vea might be possibilities, too, especially if Licht accepts an offer to trade down.
If there's one thing that stood out to Licht in studying film of the Super Bowl champion Eagles in evaluating Allen and Curry for free agency is that a team can never have too many pass rushers and run-stoppers.
Former Ravens center Ryan Jensen has been the biggest addition on offense this offseason. Running back, guard and tackle are positions Licht and coach Dirk Koetter may try to upgrade in later rounds.
Not that Licht is providing much insight into his plans.
With as many as three or Authentic Nolan Patrick Jersey , possibly, four quarterbacks under consideration to be selected early, this year's top 10 is difficult to project.
"I don't like picking at seven just because it means it's a repercussion of your season, the disappointment of the season before," Licht said.
"But, with Mike Evans it worked out. So hopefully it's a lucky number seven," the GM added. "There are enough players there, if no quarterback went above us, that we would be very excited about if we stayed put."
WHERE'S THE RUSH?
The Bucs were last in the NFL with 23 sacks last season. They haven't had a double-digit sack leader since Simeon Rice in 2005, which is one of the reasons they're so excited to have Pierre-Paul.
The hope is the presence of the former Giants star will help six-time Pro Bowl tackle Gerald McCoy raise his game to an even higher level. Third-year pro Noah Spence has shown flashes as a pass rusher, but has been injured most of his career.
HELP FOR JAMEIS?
While finding a running back capable of easing the burden on Winston to carry the offense is a priority, it's generally felt the Bucs would like to find more help on defense before eyeing a replacement for Doug Martin, who was released.
With Brent Grimes turning 35 this summer and Vernon Hargreaves III, a first-round pick two years ago Luke Falk Color Rush Jersey , losing his starting job last season, it's important to strengthen the secondary.
Licht says he likes Fitzpatrick and James, though it remains to be seen how much. Both figure to be available if Tampa Bay picks seventh.
"The thing about Minkah is that he's played a lot of slot this year. He's played outside corner and in that slot position, (and) you can see some of the things that he would do at safety," Licht said. "He's a really smart guy and versatility is a great asset of his. ... We have a plan if he were the pick, what we'd do with it, what we'd do with him. We like the fact that he can do a lot of those things."
As for James: "He's also a versatile guy, but he's more of a strong safety," the GM said. "But he can also drop down in your sub packages and play linebacker. He's another good player."
HITS, MISSES AND BARGAINS
The Bucs haven't made the playoffs since 2007 and haven't won a postseason game since the franchise's 2002 run to a Super Bowl title.
A spotty draft record is one of the reasons. Winston was the No. 1 overall pick three years ago and had a pair of 4,000-yard seasons passing before taking a step back, largely because injuries, in 2017.
Evans has topped 1,000 yards receiving four consecutive seasons and recently became one of the highest-paid receivers in the league. There have been notable misses over the past five years 鈥?none bigger than kicker Roberto Aguayo Jaguars DJ Chark Jersey , selected in the second round in 2016.
He struggled as a rookie and was cut early in training camp the following year.
Licht hasn't had much success finding gems in later rounds, however middle linebacker Kwon Alexander has exceeded expectations, going from a fourth-round pick in 2015 to the Pro Bowl in his third season.
Thomas Dressen won a men’s World Cup downhill race on Saturday, less than two months after he became the first German winner in the discipline in 13 years.
Dressen edged world champion Beat Feuz of Switzerland by 0.08 seconds, while Olympic gold medalist Aksel Lund Svindal finished 0.17 back in third. Svindal’s Norwegian teammate Kjetil Jansrud was fourth.
”It’s crazy. Before the season I expected a lot but not that things would go so well,” said Dressen after his second career win.
Dressen and Feuz also came 1-2 at the classic race in Kitzbuehel in January, which was the first German downhill victory in the men’s World Cup since 2005.
In a similar scenario to January’s race, Dressen started after most pre-race favorites had completed their runs. He trailed Feuz by 0.09 at the final split time but gained nearly two tenths at the bottom section of the Olympiabakken course.
Dressen had his first top-10 result on the same hill a year ago.
”From then on, I have been more relaxed,” said the German.
Svindal called Dressen’s victory ”no coincidence. He is one of the best downhill racers.”
In his breakthrough season, Dressen also reached the podium in Beaver Creek in December, and finished fifth in the Olympic downhill in Pyeongchang after leading one of the training runs.
While the 24-year-old Dressen could be a future candidate for the downhill season title, this season’s globe will be contested between Feuz and Svindal.
Saturday’s result boosted Feuz’s chances as he extended his lead in the downhill standings over the Norwegian to 60 points with only the season-ending race at the World Cup finals in Sweden on Wednesday remaining.
”It’s been a cool fight between us all year,” said Feuz Kyle Long Bears Jersey , who won three downhill races this season, one more than Svindal.
If Feuz can hold on to his lead, he will earn his first crystal globe after finishing runner-up three times – in the downhill, combined and overall standings, all in the 2011-12 season.
”Of course you think about (the globe) but at the start of a race you have to get it out of your mind,” Feuz said. ”In Are it will be real final. (Svindal) will be fighting for the victory and I can’t take it easy, either.”
Svindal, who is a two-time overall champion, has won the downhill title twice but not since 2014.
A super-G on the same course is scheduled for Sunday.

The Minnesota Twins signed first-round draft pick Trevor Larnach just one day before Major League Baseball’s deadline.
For both sides Darius Leonard Youth Jersey , the delay was well worth the wait. There were no contentious contract negotiations in the way, only a College World Series championship for Larnach with Oregon State.
”We figured it would go to the end, because I thought Oregon State was the best team I saw all spring,” Twins scouting director Sean Johnson said. ”They were really built to win that series, so we knew it would take a while.”
Larnach’s standard minor league deal, signed on Thursday afternoon, came with a $2.55 million signing bonus. The slot value set by MLB for the 20th overall selection was $3.12 million, so the Twins put some of that savings toward signing other players in their draft class.
Larnach Jonathan Cooper Color Rush Jersey , a corner outfielder who hit .327 with 17 home runs and 65 RBIs this season for the Beavers, batted .417 with five doubles, nine RBIs and 10 runs scored in eight games at the College World Series. His two-run homer in the ninth inning against Arkansas helped Oregon State stave off elimination in the second game of the finals , and the Beavers went on to win the decisive third game the following night.
”I would say it’s probably the closest thing you are going to get to playing here in the big leagues,” Larnach said as he toured Target Field for the first time before the Twins played Baltimore on Thursday night. ”There are a lot of people at every game. You start playing some SEC teams, and you start hearing them pretty well. It’s all part of it. It’s a wonderful experience, and I wish I could re-live some of it, but you know there are better times ahead.”
The Twins said the 21-year-old Larnach will report to rookie-level Elizabethton of the Appalachian League.
”It’s good to have him in the fold Youth Fred Warner Jersey ,” Twins manager Paul Molitor said. ”I told him to enjoy the experience. I couldn’t really relate to him what it was like to sign at this particular point in my life because it was 40-some years ago, but it was nice for him and his parents to come in and have a chance to talk with them.”
Johnson was on a scouting trip in North Carolina, dining at The Cheesecake Factory restaurant with Twins vice president of player personnel Mike Radcliff, when they saw Larnach’s dramatic home run. They weren’t exactly sweating the timing of the signing.
”Twenty seconds before he hit the home run, I’m like, `If he hits a home run here to give them the lead, we can wait another day,”’ Johnson recalled. ”Right on cue James Washington Jersey Elite , he hit it. That was the first time I celebrated in a Cheesecake Factory. That was pretty cool. That was a fun moment to watch.”
For Larnach, too, of course.
”My experience at Oregon State, man, it’s pretty unbelievable. I can’t put that into words,” he said. ”I can’t thank my family at Oregon State enough for what they’ve done for me. I’m always going to come back to them and say hi and give them my love and just give back to them as much as I can, because they’ve developed me not only as ballplayer but as a person, and that’s what they promised when I got there.”

The Washington Nationals have activated right-hander Jeremy Hellickson from the 10-day disabled list and will start him against Philadelphia.
The Nationals made the move before playing at Citizens Bank Park on Saturday. Reliever Sammy Solis was sent to Triple-A Syracuse.
Hellickson is 2-0 with a 2.28 ERA in nine starts this season. The veteran right-hander has been sidelined since June 4 with a right hamstring strain. He was 6-5 for Philadelphia last year.
Solis is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in 40 games this season. In 28 innings Authentic James Neal Jersey , the left-hander has allowed 22 hits with 30 strikeouts and 15 walks.
Also, Washington transferred third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, who has been out since May 10 with a strained right oblique, to the 60-day DL.
The Nationals reinstated catcher Raudy Read from the restricted list and optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse. Read, who appeared in eight games last season, is coming off an 80-game suspension after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

Former New York Giants linebacker and Montana State star Corey Widmer has declined his nomination to the Montana Football Hall of Fame 49ers Dante Pettis Jersey , saying the sport "destroyed my life."
Widmer said after numerous concussions he fears he suffers from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease. He has depression, memory problems, suffers from mood swings and seeks to isolate himself. Recently, he said, his thumb has started twitching.
"I'm 49 years old, depressed to the Nth degree but have a lot of money . and some people might say it's still worth it. I just tell them to watch what they wish for," Widmer told the Bozeman Daily Chronicle . "If someone could've explained all of this to me when I was 14 Authentic Matt Belisle Jersey , I would've given it all back in a heartbeat. I would've wished for something else."
The Bozeman native said he couldn't in good conscience be a part of Saturday's banquet in Billings celebrating a sport that caused great suffering among his friends and that he believes endangers children.
"When I refused entry I had to give an explanation, and my explanation is concussion," Widmer told Lee Newspapers of Montana .
But he didn't want to state his reasons during the ceremony that inducted eight other members to the Montana hall, including former Detroit Lions tight end Casey FitzSimmons and former Carolina Panthers and Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle Dwan Edwards.
The banquet also honored the Petrino coaching tree that began with former Carroll College football coach Bob Petrino and includes his sons 鈥?Louisville coach Bobby Petrino and Idaho coach Paul Petrino. It also honored coaches who once played for Bob Petrino, a group that includes Denver Broncos special teams coordinator Tom McMahon.
"I don't want to make some political statement right in the middle of their party and take advantage of some very nice people," said Widmer, who was a plaintiff in the NFL concussion lawsuit.
But he said he also couldn't stay silent anymore after reading a recent news story about a lawsuit filed by the family of a 16-year-old Belt High School student who suffered a concussion in a 2014 game and collapsed after playing the next weekend, leaving him nearly paralyzed and unable to speak.
"That was the moment that made me understand Braden Smith Color Rush Jersey ," he said. He had taken a planned trip to Australia thinking he'd "just escape and walk away from everything. I didn't want the drama.
"But when I got over there I just got this overwhelming guilt, anxiety and was not sleeping," he said. "Every day I was waking up thinking about this."
So he came back to Montana to explain himself and to urge parents to delay their children's participation in tackle football, maybe even until their senior year in high school. He argued that letting children in fifth through eighth grade participate in tackle football equates to child endangerment.
"If we can just have parents take another look at these kids and the potential dangers for the most prized possessions in their life, maybe they could put that off for a few years," he said.
Widmer played with the Giants from 1992 to 1999, finishing with 271 tackles, 7.5 sacks and four interceptions. He was a standout defensive lineman at Montana State from 1987-91.
Coach Hue Jackson is leaning on his Browns family while mourning the deaths of his mother and brother.
Jackson's mother Betty Lee Jackson and brother John Jr. Cheap Customized Detroit Lions Jerseys , recently died within a two-week span. Jackson's 83-year-old mother passed away on Sunday in Los Angeles following a lengthy illness.
Jackson has been coping with the losses during training camp and intends to stay with the team through the Aug. 9 exhibition opener against the New York Giants. Jackson, who is in this third season with Cleveland, plans to leave for California following the game for his mother's funeral.
He will rejoin the Browns for practice on Aug. 12. The team had pre-planned off days on Aug. 10-11.
In the meantime, Jackson said he has received support from players, fellow coaches and owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam.
"It's been a difficult period of time for me, but everyone has to go through this in life," Jackson said. "It's not easy, but I always try to focus on the fond memories I've shared with the people I've lost and that helps get you through it. Dee Frank Ragnow Jersey Elite , Jimmy, our players, coaches and really the entire organization have been so supportive and that helps. We're a close-knit group, this is a family and I'm so appreciative of everyone's support."
Browns tight end coach Greg Season has known Jackson for years. They worked together at the University of Pacific and with the Cincinnati Bengals.
"He's a tough-minded individual," Seamon said Thursday between practice sessions. "It's been an unusually tragic two weeks and it comes at a time when things are already very stressful. Hue does a great job compartmentalizing things. And when he has to be the head football coach in front of the team, he's done that. And then when that's over and he needs to address the family issues, he certainly has done that.
"His mother put up a long and courageous fight."

The Latest on Wednesday’s final slate of NBA regular-season games (all times local):
3:10 a.m.
The NBA has released the first-round playoff schedule Rashaan Evans Titans Jersey , and the reigning NBA champs will host the postseason opener.
Game 1 between Golden State and San Antonio opens the slate on Saturday at 3 p.m. Eastern – a somewhat unusual noon local time tip-off for the Warriors.
The Warriors-Spurs game will followed Saturday by three other openers – Washington-Toronto, Miami-Philadelphia and New Orleans-Portland.
On Sunday, the games are Milwaukee-Boston, Indiana-Cleveland, Utah-Oklahoma City and Minnesota-Houston.
Game 2s will be held Monday through Wednesday.
Game 3s start Thursday, and all Game 7s – if necessary – would be on April 28 and 29.
For those planning way ahead, the NBA Finals are set to begin on May 31.

1:00 a.m.
The NBA playoff bracket is complete.
Portland beat Utah to grab the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference, and that allowed the rest of the bracket to be filled in – finally. The Trail Blazers will play No. 6 New Orleans in the first round, and No. 4 Oklahoma City will have home-court advantage against the fifth-seeded Jazz.
The Jazz-Blazers game was the 1,230th and final regular-season matchup of the season. Every other game on Wednesday’s schedule was over before the final buzzer in Portland, meaning it took the entire schedule to determine the last two matchups in the West.

11:55 p.m.
The first two of the four Western Conference first-round matchups have been set.
No. 1 Houston will play No. 8 Minnesota, and No. 2 Golden State (probably with no Stephen Curry) will play No. 7 San Antonio (probably with no Kawhi Leonard).
The Rockets swept four games from the Timberwolves, and the Warriors went 3-1 against the Spurs in the regular season.
The rest of the West bracket will be set based on the outcome of the Utah-Portland game. New Orleans will start on the road, regardless of the winner, and Oklahoma City – thanks to its wild 137-123 win over Memphis – could still get a top-four seed.

10:50 p.m.
Minnesota is in the playoffs.
Jeff Teague’s jumper with just over a minute left in overtime put the Timberwolves ahead to stay, and Minnesota topped Denver 112-106 on Wednesday night to grab the final spot in the NBA playoffs.
The last West spot was the only one up for grabs on the season’s final night. It was the NBA’s first winner-gets-in, loser-goes-home game since 1997.
Denver would have gone to the postseason with a win at Minnesota.
Minnesota is in the playoffs for the first time since 2004 – ending what was the longest active drought in the NBA

10:40 p.m.
The East is set.
It took 82 games, the entire regular season and even an overtime in Miami to decide things Kyle Long Jersey Youth , but the bracket for the Eastern Conference playoffs is filled.
No. 1 Toronto will play No. 8 Washington, No. 2 Boston will meet No. 7 Milwaukee, No. 3 Philadelphia draws No. 6 Miami and No. 4 Cleveland gets No. 5 Indiana.
All the Game 1s will be Saturday or Sunday, at the lower seed.
Indiana went 3-1 against the Cavaliers in the regular season. All the other first-round matchups are ones where the playoff foes split four meetings this season.

10:15 p.m.
For the first time since 2001, Philadelphia is a top-three seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
For the first time since 2008, LeBron James is not.
The 76ers routed Milwaukee 130-95 on Wednesday night to wrap up the No. 3 seed on the East bracket, and that meant No. 4 Cleveland will face No. 5 Indiana when the playoffs open this weekend.
Philadelphia’s 16-game winning streak is the longest to end a regular season in NBA history.
Philadelphia rolled from the start, taking a 46-18 lead after the first quarter. The 28-point margin tied for the sixth-largest in any quarter of 76ers history.
The only way Cleveland would have finished No. 3 was if it won and Philadelphia lost. But with the 76ers taking command so quickly and essentially locking Cleveland into No. 4 long before the final buzzers, James got most of Wednesday night off. He finished with 10 points in just over 10 minutes.

9:40 p.m.
Russell Westbrook will average a triple-double for the second straight season.
The Oklahoma City guard came into Wednesday needing 16 rebounds against Memphis to average 10.0 boards this season – and got there in the third quarter of the Thunder’s game against the Grizzlies.
Westbrook has no issue outdueling teammates for rebounds, and grabbed 16 of the Thunder’s first 27 rebounds on Wednesday.
It’s only the third time in NBA history that someone has averaged a triple-double. Westbrook did it last year, and Oscar Robertson did it in 1961-62.

9:30 p.m.
Houston Rockets forward Luc Mbah a Moute will likely miss at least the first round of the playoffs after dislocating his right shoulder in a meaningless game for the Western Conference leaders.
Coach Mike D’Antoni said Wednesday that Mbah a Moute will likely miss two to three weeks with the injury sustained against the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night.
Mbah a Moute missed 15 games in December and January after dislocating his right shoulder during a fall, and it happened again on a dunk in traffic at Staples Center.
Mbah a Moute is a key rotation player for the Rockets, who have the best record in the NBA. He averages 7.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game off the bench.

9 p.m.
Eric Staal was coming off his least productive NHL season since he was a teenage rookie with Carolina when Minnesota took a flier on him two summers ago to add some depth at center.
The three-year contract was modest for a player with Staal’s ability and accomplishments. The expectations were, too. Three consecutive seasons of decline in points per game, after all, don’t provide a hint that the scoring touch or passing knack is primed for resurgence.
Bruce Boudreau could see the rebound potential, though. His first day of training camp with the Wild happened to be Staal’s practice debut with his new club, and a strong impression was made on the new head coach.
”I said Authentic Durham Smythe Jersey , `You know what? Everybody was wrong,”’ Boudreau said. ”Because he did the skate test on the very first day, and he blew everybody out of the water. So I said to the staff, `He should be able to play for us.”’
Staal has done much more for the Wild than simply prove he can keep up and stabilize a key position with some savviness and leadership. Nobody on the team has scored more since he arrived, and with 40 goals this season he’s tied for sixth in the league through Monday’s games.
”I never thought a specific number was a goal. I don’t ever usually think like that,” Staal said. ”Once you start a season, it can go a lot of different ways, but once the puck starts hitting the back of the net and you’re gaining confidence that way, you want to hold on to it as long as you can and accumulate as much as you can to help your team win.”
Staal became just the second player in NHL history, joining Gordie Howe, to record a 40-goal season at least nine years apart with none in between. Slumps can factor into that, but so does dedication.
”Look, he’s won a Stanley Cup. He’s won an Olympic medal. He’s got all the money that he’s ever going to need,” Boudreau said. ”But when he came here he wanted to prove to the world that he’s still a really good player, and to me he has.”
The lanky 33-year-old with the left-handed shot has been a big reason why the Wild, despite some rough patches of the schedule and significant injury absences by several of their best skaters, have clinched a spot in the playoffs for the sixth straight season.
”You want that, especially as a player who’s in the second half of his career. You want to make sure you’re in a spot to try to win again James Daniels Color Rush Jersey , and coming here I felt gave me that chance,” said Staal, the second overall pick in the 2003 draft who won the Stanley Cup in 2006 at age 21 but only returned to the playoffs once more with the Hurricanes. ”We’ve still got some work to do here, but hopefully we can finish strong.”
Staal only has one goal-less stretch on his ledger longer than four games in a row, when he played six consecutive contests without scoring from Jan. 9-22. He still contributed four assists over that span. Not coincidentally, the Wild have only one losing streak larger than two. They dropped three in a row from Nov. 4-8.
”He’s a guy we’ve definitely looked to to help lead us,” said left wing Jason Zucker, one of the many linemates Staal has saddled up to this season – without, Boudreau said beamingly, a single complaint.
Durability has been one crucial component of his value, of course. Staal has yet to miss a game since signing the $10.5 million deal on July 1, 2016. The emotional steadiness he has contributed can’t be overlooked, either.
”He’s been through the best of teams. He’s been through the worst of teams. He’s been the leader on all of these teams,” Boudreau said. ”He’s had to make sure he’s the steady one, because if he gets too high, maybe the rest of the group gets too high. If he was one to get too low, maybe everybody else would follow his lead.”
The Wild actually left Staal exposed in the expansion draft, banking on his age being less attractive to the Vegas Golden Knights. His salary cap hit is only the ninth-highest on the roster.
”If he was playing in Toronto Harrison Phillips Color Rush Jersey , he’d be up for the MVP,” Boudreau said.
Settling in Minnesota was more than satisfying for Staal, with the perennial postseason opportunities and the relative proximity to his hometown of Thunder Bay, Manitoba, about a six-hour drive away. He and his wife, Tanya, have been able to raise sons Parker, Levi and Finley, in a similar northern culture and climate that he was raised in, delighting in seeing the boys at 8, 6 and 3 years old take to the local hockey rinks or eagerly hop on their sleds after the latest snowfall.
”All that stuff I grew up doing and loving, and now I’m kind of living it back through them,” Staal said. ”It’s definitely made it a ton of fun.”

Boomer Esiason is dropping his national radio duties on NFL Monday night games.
Esiason was the analyst on Westwood One's broadcast for 18 years Authentic Nikita Kucherov Jersey , sharing the booth with Kevin Harlan and, before that, Marv Albert and Howard David. The 1988 NFL MVP called the Super Bowl for each of those seasons.
Citing his daily drive-time radio show in New York and his work on CBS and Showtime studio shows, Esiason said Monday "the timing was right for me to step away."
A 14-year NFL veteran who led the Bengals to the 1988 AFC title, Esiason made four Pro Bowls. He ranks first among left-handed quarterbacks with 247 touchdown passes, and 19th overall.
After his son, Gunnar, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis Cheap Mark Andrews Jersey , Esiason created the Boomer Esiason Foundation (BEF) in 1993 to fund research to find a cure for the deadly disease. Its mission is to provide a higher quality of life for people with cystic fibrosis. In addition, BEF provides education, awareness, and scholarships for people with the disease.
BEF has raised more than $150 million for the fight against cystic fibrosis. In 1995, the NFL honored him with the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award for excellence on the football field and charitable work through his foundation.
The Chicago White Sox had the fog machine and strobe lights going after their latest victory. Considering how little they have had to celebrate this season, they’re not going to let the opportunities go by.
James Shields won for the first time since opening day, Yoan Moncada and Yolmer Sanchez homered to lead off a three-run first, and Chicago beat the Cleveland Indians 5-1 on Tuesday night.
Shields (2-7) gave up one run and four hits in seven innings after going 12 starts and 13 appearances without a win. The veteran right-hander struck out two and did not walk a batter in his first victory since the opener at Kansas City.
”We’re trying to celebrate each win Dak Prescott Jersey ,” Shields said. ”We’re gonna go game by game and try to win the series and enjoy the moment.”
Moncada said through an interpreter that the White Sox started breaking out the fog machine and strobe lights a few weeks ago. On Tuesday, he and Sanchez got the party started .
They connected on consecutive pitches from Adam Plutko. Matt Davidson drove RBI doubles off the center-field wall in both the first and a two-run fifth , and the White Sox beat the AL Central leaders after losing their first four meetings this season.
Recalled from Triple-A Columbus, Plutko (3-1) got tagged for five runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. The 26-year-old righty won his first three major league starts this season before getting knocked around by Chicago.
Shields hit Francisco Lindor in the right foot with his first pitch of the game. He also gave up a sacrifice fly to Jose Ramirez in the sixth, but not much else in a dominant outing .
”He doesn’t have the same stuff that he once had, so he’s learned how to be a pitcher,” Jason Kipnis said. ”To live on the corners, to get guys to hit off his pitches Jordan Howard Jersey , and he’s done a good job with it and he did a great job tonight. As a team, we’ve got to make an adjustment faster to that, not be chasing those type of pitches.”
HANGING ON
Cleveland stranded two on in the ninth and came up short after winning five of six.
Xavier Cedeno struck out Jason Kipnis with runners on first and third and one out. Yonder Alonso then took second on indifference before Joakim Soria retired Yan Gomes on a fly to the center-field warning track for his ninth save in 11 chances.
GOING DEEP
Moncada lined a 2-1 pitch over the center-field wall for his fourth career leadoff homer – all this season. Sanchez sent Plutko’s next offering out to right-center, giving Chicago back-to-back drives for the fourth time this season. The White Sox had not started a first inning with consecutive homers since Alen Hanson and Sanchez connected against Tampa Bay’s Chris Archer on Sept. 2.
QUOTABLE
”I feel like I’ve been pitching really well for the most part, a lot, this season. But wins haven’t come my way.” – Shields on the victory.
ROSTER MOVE
The Indians optioned catcher and outfielder Francisco Mejia back to Triple-A a day after recalling him, because catcher Roberto Perez did not need to go on the disabled list. Perez was hit by a pitch in the right wrist against Detroit on Sunday.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Indians: 2B Kipnis (neck) was back in the lineup after sitting out the previous two games and so was 1B Edwin Encarnacion (ankle) after missing three in a row. … The Indians continue to hold off on activating OF Brandon Guyer (strained neck) after he was hit in the wrist by a pitch during a rehab game for Columbus on Sunday. Manager Terry Francona indicated they might wait until Thursday, when the White Sox send a lefty to the mound in Carlos Rodon. ”We’re just trying to make sure he’s ready Authentic Mike Gesicki Jersey ,” Francona said.
White Sox: OF Avisail Garcia (strained right hamstring) went 1 for 2 for Triple-A Charlotte against Durham in his first rehab game on Tuesday.
UP NEXT
Indians: RHP Trevor Bauer (5-4, 2.62 ERA) hopes to continue his mastery over the White Sox after going 2-0 with a 2.19 ERA in two starts against them last year.
White Sox: RHP Dylan Covey (2-1, 2.22) tries to build on another strong outing after throwing three-hit ball over six innings in a 1-0 victory over Chris Sale and the Red Sox at Fenway Park on Friday.

Two former Detroit Lions employees have filed suit against the team Da'Shawn Hand Color Rush Jersey , claiming they were fired because of racial and age discrimination.
The Detroit Free Press reports Tuesday that the former employees say they experienced disparaging comments because of their race. Robert Yanagi and Michael Richardson filed a lawsuit in Wayne County Circuit Court last month, seeking damages of over $25,000.
Yanagi, 58, is of Japanese descent. He was the team’s director of video operations. Richardson, a 52-year-old African-American, was an assistant video director.
The Lions said because the report involved ongoing litigation, it would be inappropriate for them to comment. The suit also names the NFL as a defendant.
According to the suit, Richardson complained to the Lions’ human resources department last December about being subjected to racist comments by an employee in the team’s scouting department, as well as ”disparate treatment” by an employee of the operations department.

Miami Dolphins 14th-year veteran John Denney first saw his future career path in eighth grade, when he bent over and looked between his legs.
His coach was putting together a place-kicking team at practice Youth Josh Jackson Jersey , and Denney volunteered to try out as a long snapper.
"Whoever was interested lined up and started snapping the ball at a tire hanging from the uprights," Denney said. "Beginner's luck, I hit the chain holding the tire and it knocked the tire off the chain. At that age, that got everybody in a frenzy."
Those cheers might still be the loudest Denney ever received for doing his job. All long snappers toil in anonymity 鈥?unless they make a mistake, and Denney doesn't. That's why he has been with the Dolphins since 2005, four years longer than any other active player.
At 39 he's among the oldest players in the NFL.
"It has been a ride, that's for sure," Denney said following a recent practice. "I would never guess 14 years later I would still be on this field in the same place. I won the lottery."
Is the hardest part of the job the drudgery of training camp in steamy South Florida?
"For everybody else, yeah," Denney said with a chuckle. "My position is different."
That's for sure. Long snappers spend much of practice off to the side with the place-kickers and punters, often watching and chatting. It's not bad duty for $1 million a year Bills Russell Bodine Jersey , which is Denney's salary this season.
But as with any specialist, there's pressure. Denney is expected to be nearly 100 percent accurate, and has been. When asked to tabulate the misfires, Dolphins special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi paused to search his memory.
"In my nine seasons with him, I think we had confusion once on a field goal," Rizzi said Tuesday. "Brandon Fields (the holder) wasn't looking, and John hit him in the face mask.
"To have to sit here and think about it is a credit to him."
And while the 6-foot-5, 242-pound Denney doesn't log as many snaps as an every-down player, he does run downfield under punts, and wins raves for staying in shape.
"The guy is in unbelievable physical condition," coach Adam Gase said. "He's the ultimate pro."
Denney doesn't look his age Korey Toomer Color Rush Jersey , but he'll turn 40 in December.
"Wow. I didn't know he was going to be 40," said running back Frank Gore, who's a mere 35. "He does work hard, though. During the offseason he works very, very hard."
That includes snapping drills. Sometimes Denney recruits his 11- and 13-year-old sons to help, and hikes in the backyard.
Like everything else, practice makes perfect.
"If I give you a ball right now and you look between your legs and everything is upside down, it's not natural," Denney said. "It's a matter of working at it to a point it becomes natural."
Denney played linebacker and offensive line in high school in Charlotte, North Carolina, and was a three-year starter at defensive end for Brigham Young. All the while he groomed his skills as a long snapper Leighton Vander Youth Esch Jersey , which is how he made the Dolphins' roster after going undrafted.
He played in every game as a rookie, and each year since he has played in all 16 games 鈥?208 in total. That's by far a team record for consecutive games, and tied for third among active NFL players.
The streak will likely grow, although Denney has nominal competition in training camp from undrafted rookie Lucas Gravelle. It's one of the few times the team has brought in another long snapper to compete with Denney, but he said he always feels like he's fighting for his job.
"Regardless of whether there is another body in camp, they have a list on a board somewhere with the next five best long snappers available," he said. "It's not like you're ever in the clear."
That accurately describes life in the NFL. As usual, Denney is right on target.

The Denver Broncos have signed Mark Chapman Chad Thomas Color Rush Jersey , a rookie wide receiver from Central Michigan University who was the top overall selection in the 2018 Canadian Football League draft.
Chapman didn’t sign with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and now is taking a longshot at playing in the NFL, an opportunity that arose after two receivers failed to report to training camp this week.
Carlos Henderson, a third-round pick out of Louisiana Tech last year, is dealing with a family situation, his agent said, and Jimmy Williams, an undrafted free agent out of East Carolina who received a $10,000 bonus, also was placed on the reserve/did not report list.
The Broncos have a dozen receivers on their roster, including incumbent starters Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders and 2018 draft picks DaeSean Hamilton and Courtland Sutton.
With veteran Jordan Taylor returning from offseason hip surgeries, there’s an abundance of receiving talent the likes of which the Broncos haven’t had since Peyton Manning was the one throwing the passes.
Henderson faces a tough task to make the 53-man roster when – and if – he shows up. He missed his rookie season with a thumb injury after an unimpressive training camp and in January was arrested in Louisiana on a marijuana possession charge. He missed much of this year’s offseason program with a lingering hamstring injury that led coach Vance Joseph to call him out.
”He’s got to get back on the field if he wants to make this football team,” Joseph said during the team’s mandatory minicamp last month.

Mashaun Alston’s office has a corkboard with pictures of some of the kids he has helped over the years. A basketball player in his uniform. A row of smiling teenagers.
On one side of the room there is a framed quote that reads, ”All those who achieve great things are great dreamers.”
Alston, 41, is definitely dreaming. In one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Chicago Wholesale Hayden Hurst Jersey , he is dreaming of more graduations and birthday parties. Life for a group of kids on the edge.
”I can be overwhelmed, but then when I go home … I never say I’m not doing this, I always reflect and say, `Wow, this kid is going through this,’ and then the next day, I’m renewed,” Alston said.
Alston is a therapist in Choose to Change, a five-month program that aims to reduce youth violence through therapy and mentorship. And it very well might be gone by now if not for the effort of one unusual coalition.
The Cubs, White Sox, Bears, Bulls and Blackhawks. The titans of Chicago sports, united with a singular purpose.

Near the end of a violent 2016 in Chicago, Roseanna Ander went to a meeting. Ander, the executive director of the University of Chicago Crime Lab Darius Leonard Colts Jersey , goes to a lot of meetings, but this one was different.
The room included White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf and his son, Michael, the president and chief operating officer of the Bulls. Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts and his sister, Laura, who also is part of the Cubs’ ownership group, were there. Same for Bears chairman George McCaskey and Blackhawks owner Rocky Wirtz.
”It was like a very Godfather-esque moment,” Ander said with a grin.
Concerned about a precipitous rise in violent crime – Chicago had 762 homicides in 2016, a 64 percent increase from 485 in the previous year – the city’s most prominent sports executives had an idea, and they were looking for help.
”They decided that this was a very unprecedented challenge facing the city and they wanted to do something unprecedented,” Ander said, ”and that was really to try to see if putting their resources together that they might be able to do something more significant than they could each do independently.”
It began with Jerry Reinsdorf, 82, who once lived in some of the South Side neighborhoods that have been racked by violence. He took the idea of a united effort to the rest of the owners, and they quickly signed on for what became the Chicago Sports Alliance.
Then came the tricky part.
”It became very clear that we really didn’t understand what was behind the homicides and the violence Clive Walford Jersey Elite ,” Michael Reinsdorf said. ”We all had ideas and theories, but we really weren’t as educated as we should be.
”We decided instead of just jumping in there and making some type of investment, let’s get smarter.”
That led the group to Ander and the Crime Lab, which was created in 2008 following the shooting death of a graduate student at the University of Chicago to study crime and develop and evaluate crime-reduction programs. While the room grabbed Ander’s attention, her presentation struck a chord with the group.
”It’s just tough,” Michael Reinsdorf said. ”I have kids and we teach our kids that they can dream and they can do anything they want and they have such incredible opportunities. But the kids that we’re talking about trying to help in some of these communities, their dreams are totally different than the dreams of like my children.
”Their dreams are like, surviving. … Their expectations are I won’t live a long life.”

Alston had a group session in May where only one of the six young men showed. It was a nice day in Chicago and graduation festivities were in full swing.
The 17-year-old who made it to the session was depressed about the death of his cousin in January. He wanted to retaliate sometimes, but he said the program was keeping him on the right track.
”He says, `Yeah, but this group,’ he says, `since I’ve been coming in February is helping me think,”’ Alston said.
A buoyed Alston kept going, sitting straight up in his chair in a common room down the hall from his office on the city’s South Side.
”You know just with the people he knows Michael Dickson Jersey Elite , the family he’s involved with, it’d be easy to go and retaliate,” he continued.
”I want you to think logical. If you go retaliate and you’re 17, there’s two things going to happen. You may get away with it for a little bit. But you’re going to end up dead because they’re going to retaliate, or you’re going to be in jail and you’re 17, I want you to get to my age.”

The Chicago Sports Alliance was unveiled in December. The teams announced a total of $1 million in one-time grants for Choose to Change, the Crime Lab and for training for embedded civilian analysts who work with the police department to develop strategies to reduce crime in the city’s most violent areas.
While the money provided a lift, the alliance itself might have made an even bigger statement.
”It’s not just the dollars, but I think it’s kind of who they are, their ability to have influence with such a huge range of the population,” Ander said. ”But I do think for me the most important thing was sending a message that this isn’t just somebody else’s problem to fix.”
The funding for Choose to Change had run out by the end of 2017, so the money from the alliance kept it alive for the first part of this year. Another group of teenagers w.

The only thing that’s gone well for Oklahoma’s massive tackle Orlando Brown Jr. this week is a vote of confidence from his Heisman Trophy-winning teammate.
”When are you ever going to watch Orlando Brown run 40 yards down the field?” quarterback Baker Mayfield asked Friday. ”You can watch last year’s tape and see he allowed zero sacks. I’d say that’s pretty important for a left tackle.”
It sure is.
But measures matter Cardinals Authentic Jerseys , too, and Brown’s wretched week will undoubtedly stick in the minds of scouts, coaches and general managers leading up to the draft next month.
The nearly 6-foot-8, 345-pound left tackle managed just 14 reps on the 225-pound bench press Thursday, the lowest total of any lineman who has lifted at the combine this week.
That’s tied for third-worst among offensive tackles since 2000 Adidas Matt Murray Jersey , according to Pro Football Reference.
Things only got worse Friday for the son of former Browns and Ravens right tackle Orlando Brown .
He lumbered through the 40-yard dash in 5.85 seconds. Even by big O-linemen standards, that’s sloth-like slow .
It’s the fifth-slowest time by any player at the combine in the last 16 years, and none of the four who were slower were drafted or started a single game in the pros.
”I’ve been fat my whole life,” Brown said earlier this week. ”I wish I was fast.”
Brown was projected to get drafted in the first couple of rounds, but his bad week in Indy could prove very costly.
His vertical jump was just 19 1/2 inches – nobody has ever gotten drafted with such a bad vertical jump – and his 6-foot-10 broad jump was off-the-charts bad Dorian O'Daniel Color Rush Jersey , as well.
Historically, offensive tackles post a tad more than 25 reps in the bench press, run the 40-yard dash in 5.24 seconds and average 28.4 inches in the vertical jump and more than 8 1/2 feet in the broad jump.
He has another chance to impress at his pro day in a couple of weeks.

The New Orleans Saints are slated to have only one pick during the second day of the draft.
Because of past trades, they have no second-round pick. Barring another trade, they won't make their selection until third round at 91st overall on Friday night.
The good news for the Saints is they were able to fill what they considered one of their most pressing offseason needs in Thursday night's first round Anthony Averett Jersey Elite , when they traded up from 27th to 14th to select Texas-San Antonio defensive end Marcus Davenport.
The 6-foot-6, 265-pound Davenport was Conference USA's defensive player of the year last season, when he had 8 陆 sacks, 17 陆 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles Broncos Courtland Sutton Jersey , a fumble recovery and four pass breakups.
New Orleans now has the luxury of selecting their highest-graded prospects, regardless of position, as the draft moves forward.
