One statistical approach that seeks to address this Nike Air VaporMax Femme uses something called Adidas Superstar Femme propensity scores, which attempt to control for the likelihood that someone wears the shoes in Adidas ZX 700 Femme the first place. We tried this, too. Nike Air Max 90 Femme Noir Our estimates didn’t change.Tony Kharitonov and Marios Athineos don’t know each other — in fact, they live on opposite coasts — but they have something in common: They both failed to get the time they wanted in the 2017 Boston Marathon. But they failed together, just nine seconds apart, two minutes on the wrong side of three hours. That race was one of the hottest in years, with temperatures approaching 80 degrees, and both runners were off pace after the course’s famous Heartbreak Hill, around Mile 21, and slowed considerably in the race’s final miles.Running a marathon in less Asics Gel lyte 5 Femme than three hours is a sign of an elite runner, and Boston is one of the world’s most prestigious races. In Nike Air VaporMax Femme April, the men returned to run it again — and both switched to a different pair of shoes. Mr. Kharitonov wore Altra Adidas ZX Flux Femme Solstice shoes, and Mr. Athineos Adidas ZX 750 Mens wore Vaporflys.Once again, weather was a factor. The 2018 race featured pouring rain, strong winds, low temperatures and a big rise in dropouts.

This time, the results were different. Mr. Athineos, a 42-year-old researcher based in San Francisco, finished with 33 seconds to spare, at 2:59:26. But Mr. Kharitonov, 49, a software engineer in Millburn, N.J., could not stay warm, and once again could not maintain his pace. For the fifth year in a row, he failed to break three hours at the Boston Marathon, finishing in 3:07:17.Perhaps not surprisingly, given the conditions, neither runner identified shoes as a factor in this year’s result. And, given what we know about how different the races Adidas NMD Womens were, it may seem unhelpful to compare times between them at all. But there is still meaningful information in Adidas ZX 700 Femme events like these in aggregate.Nike Air Max 270 Homme Instead of directly comparing performances in the two races, we can compare the net change of runners who switched to Vaporflys with the net change of similar runners who did not. Of the 1,275 runners in our data who ran Boston both years, 52 switched to Vaporflys in 2018, as Mr. Athineos did. On the whole, those runners’ times improved more than that of the group of runners who did not.Claire Cain Miller writes about gender, families and the future of work for The Upshot.

This specific comparison may be too extreme for any study of shoes, and perhaps it is. But Boston 2017 and Boston 2018 are just one pair of races, and there are hundreds of pairs of races in our data in which large groups of Adidas Superstar Womens runners ran the same two races and in which a subset of them switched shoes. When we compare all these pairs Adidas NMD Mujerof races among all kinds Adidas NMD Femme of popular shoes, we see that, on average, runners who switched to Vaporflys improved their times more than similar runners who switched to any other kind of popular shoe. The runners who use Strava are an enthusiastic bunch: About one in four have uploaded data for two or more marathons, and about one in 10 have uploaded data for three or more. The Strava data allows us to follow these repeat racers over time, and, crucially, as they change shoes.Glenn Kasin, a 49-year-old doctoral student at the Southern California University of Health Sciences, is one of these avid runners. He has uploaded five marathons to Strava since November 2015, and he wore a different pair of shoes in every race. In January, at Nike Air Max 90 Femme the Houston Marathon, he decided to race in Vaporflys.

Fantasy Tip: Dalton and Green have connected for league-high 21 plays of 50 or more yards since 2011 and could take advantage of Indy's new defense and young secondary.
The NFL spent a lot of time and effort in the offseason simplifying what constitutes a catch and trying to make the game safer with new rules that require both offensive and defensive players to use their heads and not their helmets.
Blunders, however, are here to stay.
Take Rob Gronkowski's spectacular 28-yard catch between two Texans defenders 鈥?which maybe wasn't really a catch 鈥?that set up a touchdown in the final seconds of the first half, giving the Patriots a 21-6 lead on their way to a 27-20 victory Sunday.
The catch stood as called, not because NFL headquarters confirmed the reception upon review, but because the league didn't buzz the officials on the field fast enough to stop the next snap so they could further scrutinize Gronk's grab.
"New York did get back to us," referee Tony Corrente said. "However, unfortunately, they didn't get the game officials on the field until after the (next) play had already started."
Crucially Patrick Maroon Jersey , the catch/non-catch stood as called.
Houston coach Bill O'Brien, who would have been penalized for throwing his red challenge flag inside the 2-minute warning, could have called timeout to allow the league office more time. But he said he didn't have a good view of the play himself.
Anyway, the clock was running and O'Brien figured the Texans could hold New England to a field goal.
They couldn't.
Tom Brady threw a 14-yard TD pass with 23 seconds left.
O'Brien said Monday he thinks it was indeed a catch by Gronkowski.
"On the coach's film, I really do," O'Brien said. "He went up; he caught it; he kept both hands underneath it. Now relative to some TV angles and some other video angles that I've seen, maybe it was questionable. From the coach's vantage point on the coach's tape, it looked like a catch to me."
We'll never know what Al Riveron, the NFL's senior vice president of officiating, would have ruled.
SEATTLE SLOW
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll was slow on the draw in Denver after Broncos rookie running back Royce Freeman put the ball on the ground for an apparent fumble Sunday. But just like Brady in Foxborough, Case Keenum hustled up to the line and the Broncos got the next snap off quickly.
"They were going fast and I had a couple of seconds to throw it and I've got to find an official," Carroll explained after Seattle's 27-24 loss. "I threw it, but he said it was too late to call it, which I'm sure he was right about that. I just needed to respond a little bit faster. I didn't hear the word from upstairs as quickly as I needed to get it executed before they hurried up.
"That's how the hurry-up does help you once in a while."
Or hurt you.
FLAG FOOTBALL
There were 26 penalties enforced in the NFL opener between the Eagles and Falcons to go with offsetting penalties on a Philadelphia punt in the fourth quarter.
Eagles coach Doug Pederson, however Jay Beagle Jersey , is convinced the officials accidentally called a foul on them when it was actually on Atlanta.
The officials called holding on No. 39 of the Eagles even though there wasn't anyone on the field for Philly wearing that number. Replays showed that No. 39 on the Falcons, Deante Burton, committed holding.
OUT OF SIGHT ...
Seattle six-time Pro Bowl safety Earl Thomas ended his holdout last week after his pay-me-or-trade-me demands were ignored by the Seahawks. He had an interception that set up Seattle's first touchdown of the season.
Two-time Pro Bowl running back Le'Veon Bell stayed away from the Pittsburgh Steelers amid public criticism from some of his own offensive linemen. And his replacement starred.
By reporting to the Seahawks last week, albeit begrudgingly, Thomas assured he won't miss out on his roughly $500,000 weekly paychecks, although he still wants more than the $8.5 million he'll make in 2018, in the final year of his contract.
"During the game I'm not thinking about it," Thomas said. "I'm out here having fun with B-Mac (safety Bradley McDougald) and the guys. So, I'm not thinking about it. When I get asked about it, it definitely runs across my mind."
Bell's contract dispute triggered teammates to turn on him last week, when center Maurkice Pouncey said, "Honestly it's a little selfish. I'm kind of (ticked) right now. It sucks that he's not here. We'll move on as a team."
That, they did.
On a day quarterback Ben Roethlisberger struggled throwing three interceptions and fumbling twice, Bell's sub Sonny Milano Jersey , James Conner, was steady, scoring two touchdowns, rushing for 135 yards and adding 57 more on five catches as the Steelers escaped Cleveland with a 21-21 tie.
His 192 total yards matched Bell's best game from last season.
"I'm so tired of Le'Veon," Steelers right guard David DeCastro told reporters. "I'm so tired of it. Let's just worry about the guys that are here. I know you guys have stories to write and what not. I love Le'Veon, but we have to worry about the guys that are here. That's the only people that matter."
TWITTER TROLL
Dez Bryant is no longer with the Dallas Cowboys, but on Sunday his thoughts sure were .
The free-agent wide receiver called out his former team with a series of critical tweets as the Cowboys lost their opener, 16-8 at Carolina.
Bryant was released in April after eight seasons with the team and remains unsigned.
When one fan asked Bryant to have his agent call Cowboys owner Jerry Jones so Dallas could re-sign him, the three-time Pro Bowl selection said he could be a good fit in New England or with the Cowboys' NFC East rivals in Washington.
Learning that Jones left the locker room quickly without comment as most reporters were interviewing running back Ezekiel Elliott, Bryant responded, "I love Jerry ,"
"I honestly don't think HE wanted me gone so I feel his pain," Bryant wrote.

Josh McDaniels didn’t know what he didn’t know.
In 2009 Authentic Adrian Peterson Jersey , he was the baby-faced 32-year-old prodigy plucked out of Bill Belichick’s roost and Tom Brady’s shadow to serve as Mike Shanahan’s replacement in Denver, holding down two jobs he’d never had: head coach and de facto general manager.
He’d trade away his starting quarterback, draft Tim Tebow and win his first six games, including one against his mentor. But he was fired halfway through his four-year contract, losing 17 of his next 22 games and presiding over his very own videotape scandal.
The Broncos blamed themselves for giving McDaniels too much power with so little experience. Denver then embarked on a renaissance under general manager John Elway and Peyton Manning.
McDaniels spent a year with the Rams before returning for a highly successful second stint with Brady and Belichick, preparing him for his second NFL head coaching gig with the Indianapolis Colts , which will become official after the Super Bowl.
Now 41, McDaniels still doesn’t look his age, but he says he is a much wiser than the brash coach who wore the gray hoodie in Denver eight years ago.
McDaniels said he was a much better trainee and tutor in his return to New England Womens Andrew Luck Jersey , much more appreciative of the breadth of Belichick’s artistry and the depth of Brady’s genius .
”It’s a unique perspective,” seeing things a second time after getting a firsthand look behind the coaching curtain, McDaniels said Wednesday, as he helped Brady and Belichick prepare for their eighth Super Bowl.
”Bill does a tremendous job of understanding the pulse of his team. He relates to everyone very well and I’ve been able to see that and look at that through a different lens. When we need a push, he pushes us. When we need love, he loves us. When we need a pat on the back, he does that. When we need to run hills, we run hills,” McDaniels said.
”He just has a tremendous ability to understand when to do what as a head coach. And he serves us in so many ways to make us better coaches Youth James Conner Jersey , to make the players better players. He’s there to help us, he doesn’t take it away from us. Believe me, I make tons of mistakes in my role and he’s there to help.”
McDaniels didn’t think it was possible, but he now holds Belichick in even higher regard than he did during his first stint from 2006-08, because he now realizes all the juggling head coaches have to do.
”Before you leave and you do that, it’s hard to say that you know what he’s going through because you really don’t,” McDaniels said. ”I’m very happy for the experiences that I’ve gone through. A lot of the failings in my career have been some of the best teachers that I’ve had. I’ve really learned a lot from them, I think I’m a better person, a better coach Claude Giroux Jersey , a better communicator, a lot of things because of the things that I haven’t done well.”
One thing he’s done exceptionally well is working with Brady, who’s going for his sixth Super Bowl ring Sunday when the Patriots play the NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles .
McDaniels has long held that working with Brady made him a better coach, because he always had to be prepared to answer the quarterback’s incessant questions, to justify the smallest of his decisions, to explain what everyone’s role was on every single play.
”We haven’t treated each other any differently. He treats me with the respect of a coach and I treat him like I need to make him a better player,” McDaniels said. ”And I think that’s the only way to do it. I know his experience and his understanding is above all others as a player. But I don’t really focus a whole lot on that. I focus on the next team, the next week, the next practice Mason Foster Jersey , our scheme, what we’re trying to do and he’s very respectful of that. And we listen and learn from each other.
”We have a tremendous relationship and it’s been an honor of my lifetime in coaching to have an opportunity to work with a guy like that as long as I have.”

David Johnson missed 15 games last season after injuring his wrist on his 17th touch in the season opener. It has not changed his value to the Cardinals.
The running back is worth more than the $1.88 million in base salary he is scheduled to make this season. Mike Garafolo of NFL Media expects Johnson to have a contract extension before the start of the season, with Johnson and his representation considering, “What’s our number? What do we want to get?”
Both sides have incentive to do a deal with Johnson entering the final year of his contract.
Johnson, 26, led the league with 2,118 yards from scrimmage and 20 total touchdowns in 2016.
He missed practice time this week with an undisclosed injury that isn’t serious.

Jon Gruden was antsy at the start of the first training camp practice for the Oakland Raiders as he was mostly a spectator while his assistants worked on fundamentals in position drills.
After a nearly 10-year wait to get back into coaching Bryan Little Jersey , Gruden was eager to get things going in the first training camp of his second stint as Raiders coach.
”I had a hard time standing and watching,” Gruden said Friday. ”It’s just awesome to be here. It’s a great responsibility. I know I have a lot to prove and I’m eager to do the best I can to do it.”
Gruden is far and away the biggest star and personality on the Raiders in his return to coaching after spending the past nine years as ESPN’s analyst on ”Monday Night Football.”
He’s adored by the Raiders fans who cheered his every move, and he provided a vocal soundtrack at practice when he barked out at his players and coaches after mistakes. He even ribbed the practice D.J. at one point.
”He’s kind of like a player on the field,” linebacker Derrick Johnson said. ”He’s very energetic. He’s loud, he’s talking trash. He wants to win. You can see his passion as a player. I can appreciate that. He’s all in. There’s a different kind of sense of urgency that we have going out to practice on the first day. It’s pretty exciting.”
There was one important piece missing, however. Star pass rusher Khalil Mack is holding out while looking for a long-term contract. Mack is entering the final season of his rookie contract that is set to pay him $13.8 million and has not taken part in the offseason program.
Gruden said he leaves the negotiations to general manager Reggie McKenzie
”Hopefully we get him in here soon because he’s an exciting player,” Gruden said. ”He’s one of the best in football.”
Getting Mack back will be important for Gruden as he tries to revitalize the Raiders after the team went from 12 wins and a playoff berth in 2016 to a 6-10 record last season that led to the firing of coach Jack Del Rio.
He has worked relentlessly since getting hired in January. He had to hire a coaching staff, install new systems, adjust to changes in the league since he last coached in Tampa Bay in 2008 Juuse Saros Jersey , and overhaul a roster that had several holes.
Getting quarterback Derek Carr back to the level he played at when he was an MVP candidate in 2016 is one of the top tasks. After a breakthrough year in his third NFL season, Carr struggled last year as he dealt with an injured back.
He matched his career high with 13 interceptions and recorded his worst totals in yards, touchdowns and passer rating since his rookie year in 2014.
Carr said he feels revitalized under the tutelage of Gruden, whom he first met at a TV quarterback camp before the 2014 draft.
”I don’t know if anything with him surprises you,” Carr said. ”He has not changed one bit since the first time I met him at Gruden’s QB camp to the first day of actual training camp practice. He is the same person. That says a lot. That doesn’t change. He is always fiery, he loves football, he wants to win, he loves his players, he loves his coaches Akiem Hicks Jersey , and he demands from you.”
Gruden is loved in Oakland and feels the same way about the Raiders fans who have pined for his return ever since he was traded to Tampa Bay following the 2001 season.
He even hosted a fan appreciation night last week at a local bar, Ricky’s Sports Theatre and Grill, which serves as a hangout for Raiders fans. More than 500 fans showed up for the event, getting treated by Gruden to a free meal and a pep rally.
”I don’t go out very often and when I do I like to be with people who are like-minded,” Gruden said. ”To associate with the real Raiders fans who support you through thick and thin, that’s good stuff.”
NOTES: Gruden said LT Donald Penn is getting close to returning from foot surgery that ended his 2017 season but still needs to prove he can move explosively. … Rookie P.J. Hall is sidelined for the start of camp with a strained pectoral muscle.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Tom Brady moved the New England Patriots with ease in their Super Bowl rematch against the penalty-prone Eagles, winning 37-20 with a little help from running back James White and fifth-round draft choice Ja’Whaun Bentley.
In his first action since losing in the NFL title game to Philadelphia, Brady completed 19 of 26 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns on Thursday night to help stake New England (2-0) to a 27-7 halftime lead.
Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles left in the second quarter with a shoulder injury after a strip sack that Bentley recovered and ran 54 yards for a touchdown.
White caught six passes for 61 yards Matt Calvert Jersey , including a 20-yard touchdown, and also ran for 31 yards in the first half of the Patriots’ 37-20 victory. The Eagles (0-2) had five penalties for 50 yards in the first quarter — including two for lowering the head to initiate contact and one for hitting a defenseless receiver — and 97 penalty yards in all.
After sitting out last week’s exhibition season opener, Brady led New England to scores on four of the six series he played.
REDSKINS 15, JETS 13
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Sam Darnold threw an interception and showed some of the growing pains of a rookie quarterback in his first preseason start for New York, which lost to Washington on a last-second field goal by Dustin Hopkins.
Darnold threw an interception, took two sacks and had a couple of balls batted out of the air. It was a far cry from the impressive debut in which the third overall pick went 13 of 18 for 96 yards for the Jets (1-1) and looked like the front-runner to win New York’s starting QB competition.
The former USC star played the entire first half before giving way to veteran Teddy Bridgewater. The former Vikings quarterback had his own inconsistences, going 10 of 15 for 127 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
Alex Smith was 4 of 6 for 48 yards in one series Danny Trevathan Jersey , his only work so far in the preseason for the Redskins (1-1).
Hopkins made all five of his field-goal attempts, including a 40-yarder as time expired to win it.
PACKERS 51, STEELERS 34
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Aaron Rodgers needed just one drive to look at home in his first action at Lambeau Field in almost a year.
Rodgers connected with tight end Jimmy Graham for an 8-yard score, and Tramon Williams had a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage of Green Bay’s win.
Five minutes after throwing the pick, Mason Rudolph found JuJu Smith-Schuster for a 4-yard touchdown pass for Pittsburgh (1-1). Rudolph, who is competing with Joshua Dobbs for a backup job, was just 5 of 12 for 47 yards in playing the first half.
Dobbs didn’t look much better after throwing a 22-yard interception returned for a touchdown by rookie cornerback Josh Jackson in the third quarter for the Packers (2-0). But Dobbs finished strong and connected with rookie receiver James Washington for two second-half touchdowns.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman shares the sports world’s amazement at the Vegas Golden Knights‘ ability to reach the Stanley Cup Final in their first year of existence.
But if the league adds another team in Seattle in the near future Ryan Strome Jersey , Bettman expects it to have every opportunity to accomplish the same feat under the same favorable expansion terms given to Vegas.
The commissioner also acknowledged that the Emerald City could secure that expansion team within the year.
The Golden Knights are hosting the Washington Capitals after winning the Western Conference in an inaugural season that ”quite simply astonished the sporting world,” Bettman said in his usual state-of-the-league remarks before the Final opened on Monday night.
Sour grapes were understandable among the fans of other NHL teams after Vegas’ incredible ascent to the top of a league with 12 other teams that have never won the Stanley Cup and seven more that haven’t won it in the last 20 years.
The Golden Knights cleverly built this winner with an undeniably generous expansion draft that allowed them to select the likes of franchise goalie Marc-Andre Fleury and many other proven NHL players. Yet Bettman said he has received ”no pushback whatsoever” about the favorable expansion draft from the league’s other 30 owners
”I think people (around hockey) are excited,” Bettman said. ”I think it’s gotten their attention.”
Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly both confirmed the NHL plans to keep the same rules on the next expansion draft. If it happens within the next two years, as increasingly expected, Vegas won’t have to lose any of its players, Daly added.
The vote on adding a Seattle franchise won’t happen in June when the board of governors meets during the league’s annual awards show in Las Vegas, Bettman said. But the board will get an update on Seattle’s plans, and a formal vote could happen later this year, perhaps at meetings in September or December.
”There is a lot of due diligence that has to be done, a lot of interaction with the prospective ownership group,” Bettman said of the group headed by billionaire investment banker David Bonderman. ”We think we’re on target, and depending on how everything goes, it wouldn’t surprise me that there is a possibility that in the fall Womens Charlie McAvoy Jersey , early winter at the latest, that this could be addressed by the board. But we’re not there yet, and there is still work to be done.”
Seattle hopes to be ready to become the NHL’s 32nd franchise in 2020, pending a $600 million renovation of Key Arena. But after the energizing effect of the Golden Knights on this hockey season, the league’s appetite for expansion – and the likely $650 million fee that will be split among the league’s other owners – has been whetted.
The NHL also has talked about adding a franchise in Houston, the largest metropolitan area in the U.S. or Canada without a team. Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta has showed interest in joining the league, but a bid likely is years away.
”I don’t think at this point in time there’s interest in filing for an expansion franchise,” Daly said. ”I think they’re relatively new NBA owners. They’re getting their feet under them in terms of operating that franchise, knowing that that means. At some point in time, we’ll have a discussion with them about whether there’s an NHL team to pursue.”

More Stanley Cup coverage: All eyes will be on Sam Darnold when the New York Jets open their season against the Detroit Lions.
But the five big guys lined up in front of him will play a major role in the success 鈥?or failure 鈥?of the rookie quarterback and his offense Monday night.
"It's super important developing that trust and chemistry with your teammates," Darnold said. "That's mostly what football is. We're on that field together, we've got to communicate. We've all got to be in sync together, so that's really what it is Authentic Brock Nelson Jersey , just communicating."
That has been a point of emphasis all offseason, but is particularly important this week as the 21-year-old quarterback continues to try to build a rapport with an offensive line that struggled with consistency last season.
It's still a work-in-progress, though. When left tackle Kelvin Beachum, left guard James Carpenter, center Spencer Long, right guard Brian Winters and right tackle Brandon Shell trot onto the field in noisy Ford Field, it'll mark the first time all five will be together for a snap in a game.
"I'm very optimistic," offensive line coach Rick Dennison said. "I think they've worked hard and done a good job. Obviously, it's the start of the regular season and there's a little bit of the unknown, but I feel good about the guys."
Beachum didn't play in the preseason because of a sprained right foot that kept him out of team drills for most of training camp. He has been a full participant in practice this week and appears to be a full go.
Same for Winters, who dealt with tightness in his back this summer and sat out the second preseason game against Washington.
"We've been around each other quite a bit during this whole process, so we can't get into this excuse-making that people on the outside are trying to bring into the locker room right now," Beachum said. "For us Mike Condon Jersey , we've got to go out and perform. We're professionals. Every one of us across the offensive line has played games in the National Football League. When our number is called upon, we know we've got to execute and perform."
The Jets are facing a tough task off the bat with Ezekiel Ansah roaming the Lions' defensive front. He had 12 sacks last season and has been lining up on the right side of new coach Matt Patricia's defense, but is athletic enough to move all around the line.
Beachum is fully expecting to face him quite a bit Monday night. The two last squared off in 2016 when Beachum was with Jacksonville. Ansah had four overall tackles in that game, but no sacks.
"He's a very disruptive pass rusher," Beachum said. "I would say one of the best in the league. The NFC North presents a number of different animals on the edge. He's one of those different animals in the NFC North. I'm excited to play him again. I know it's going to be a great test to start the year."
The game will also mark Long's debut with the Jets after he signed with New York as a free agent in the offseason. He replaces Wesley Johnson, who struggled last year in a full-time role as the center after the Jets released Nick Mangold.
Long, who spent his first four seasons with Washington, has impressed his new teammates with his cerebral approach to the game.
"He's been great, real good," Winters said. "He's a good communicator, a physical player. He's in the books a lot. He's a 'mind' guy and he kind of reminds me a little bit of Nick. Nick was real smart when it came to the breakdown of the game."
Added Shell: "He analyzes everything and it's like he knows what's going to happen, so he puts us in the right position with calls. I'm just grateful to have him on the line."
As the center, Long is responsible for calling the signals along the offensive line and making sure the guys on either side of him are seeing the same thing.
Since offseason workouts Nikolaj Ehlers Jersey , he has been working closely with his linemates on the field and in the film room, trying to develop the type of chemistry that will be key on gameday.
"It goes as he goes," Winters said. "He makes the calls and we've got to abide by it and listen to it. Whatever he says, goes. He's got a lot of weight on his shoulders, but we all trust in him."
And, Darnold will need to have faith in all five linemen, who'll be trying to keep him upright while also giving him time to throw or busting open holes for the running backs to run through and get the offense moving consistently.
"He's done a great job of being able to communicate and understand what the defense is presenting him, and then putting us in a better position to either pick up a blitz or slide a different way," Beachum said of Darnold. "He's done things the right way to put us in a better position.
"At the end of the day, we have to make sure that we protect him."

Patric Hornqvist Womens Mitchell Trubisky Jersey , Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel scored in a 4:49 span of the third period to help the Pittsburgh Penguins rally to for a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals on Thursday night in Game 1 of the second-round series.
Down 2-0 and playing without Evgeni Malkin and Carl Hagelin, Pittsburgh turned it around with all three of its top-line forwards chipping in a goal. Crosby scored the tying goal when the puck bounced to him off Alex Ovechkin’s stick, and assisted on Guentzel’s go-ahead goal.
Matt Murray stopped 32 of the 34 shots he faced to put the back-to-back defending Stanley Cup champions ahead in yet another series with Game 2 on Sunday in Washington. The Penguins have won nine in a row under coach Mike Sullivan dating to 2016, including the past two meetings against Washington.
Evgeny Kuznetsov scored 17 seconds in and Ovechkin beat Murray 28 seconds into the third period for the Capitals, who lost a game started by Braden Holtby for the first time in these playoffs.
Holtby allowed three goals on 25 shots.

LAS VEGAS (AP) – Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 33 shots for his third shutout of the playoffs, and the Vegas beat San Jose in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals.
Cody Eakin, Erik Haula and Jonathan Marchessault scored 1:31 apart early in the first period to get Vegas going. Alex Tuch, Shea Theodore, Colin Miller and James Neal also scored Ibraheim Campbell Jersey , Reilly Smith and William Karlsson each had three assists, and Marchessault and David Perron added two each.
Fleury, who improved to 5-0 in the playoffs, got his 13th career shutout in the playoffs – and second straight. He also blanked Los Angeles 1-0 in Game 4 of the first round.
The Golden Knights have now outscored opponents 14-3 in five games in the postseason.
Sharks goalie Martin Jones, who stopped 128 of 132 shots in the first round against the Ducks Nate Schmidt Jersey , was pulled a little more than three minutes into the second period after allowing five goals on 13 shots. Backup goalie Aaron Dell came in and finished with 19 saves.
Defensive end Cliff Avril is one of many longtime Seahawks to leave the team this offseason, which leaves few ties to the team that won the Super Bowl after the 2013 season.
One of those remaining on the roster is safety Earl Thomas, although there seems to be a chance that he’s played his final down in Seattle as well. When Thomas announced he wasn’t going to attend mandatory minicamp in June, he said he would not take part in any team activities until his “contract situation is resolved.”
That statement came after Thomas invited Cowboys coach Jason Garrett to come get him after a December game and an offseason that saw the Seahawks talk about a Thomas trade with teams including the Cowboys. Avril said on Sirius XM NFL Radio that Thomas’ love for the Cowboys was an open secret in a Seahawks locker room that paid it little mind.
“Everyone in [the Seahawks] locker room knows Earl loves the Cowboys,” Avril said. “He’d leave immediately after work just to catch them play Monday Night Football. We didn’t take it too serious. Whatever team he dresses up for he’s gonna do his thing.”
Trade chatter has died down Authentic Landon Collins Jersey , but it could spark up again if Thomas is going to hold out of camp and the Seahawks decide to continue their roster overhaul by shipping him out of town. If they do, Thomas’ eyes likely won’t be the only ones on Dallas as a potential landing spot.

Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints face the prospect of seeing their season end where it began.
That is Montae Nicholson Jersey , unless they’ve improved enough to turn the tables on the Minnesota Vikings, who beat New Orleans convincingly in Week 1.
”That feels like ages and ages ago,” Brees said of the 29-19 loss in Minnesota, describing the difference between the Saints then and now as ”night and day.”
The Saints (12-5) rebounded from double-digit losses to the Vikings and New England Patriots in their first two games to win the NFC South. Now they’re on to the divisional round of the NFC playoffs after holding off Carolina (11-6), 31-26 on Sunday.
New Orleans’ next game comes one day before Brees turns 39 years old, and will come one week after the veteran quarterback reminded everyone he’s still capable of big passing days if opposing defenses sell out to stop the Pro Bowl running back tandem of Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara.
Brees completed 23 passes to eight different receivers for 375 yards and two touchdowns. Only two of his completions went to Ingram or Kamara, who accounted for only 68 yards from scrimmage combined.
”We trust our system. We trust each other and what we proved is we can beat you in a lot of different ways,” Brees said. ”There’s no better feeling than knowing you just won, not only won but won a playoff game as a team and now you’re on to the next one.”
His touchdown passes of 80 yards to Ted Ginn and 9-yards to tight end Josh Hill helped New Orleans open up a 21-6 lead late in the first half. Michael Thomas caught eight passes for 131 yards, including a 46-yarder that set up Kamara’s short TD run in the fourth quarter.
For the Panthers, it was an excruciating end to the season. Beaten soundly by the Saints twice before this season, they pushed New Orleans to the brink in the third matchup.
Aided by the return of star tight end Greg Olsen, the Panthers drove inside the Saints 22-yard line five times, only to come away with nothing twice and field goals three other times.
”That was the difference in the game,” said Olsen, who had eight catches for 107 yards and a touchdown. ”We moved the ball pretty much at will the whole game. We just struggled in the first half in the red zone and it turned out to be points that we kept chasing.”
Still Zemgus Girgensons Jersey , the Panthers had a first down on the Saints 21 with 41 seconds left. It wasn’t until Newton’s intentional grounding in the face of end Cameron Jordan’s pass rush, followed by Vonn Bell’s sack on a safety blitz on fourth down, that the Saints sealed the victory.
Some other things to know from the Saints’ win:
GETTING PRESSURE: The Saints sacked Newton four times. Jordan, Bell, linebacker Jonathan Freeny and defensive tackle David Onyemata each had one. Jordan, a newly named All-Pro, also tipped two passes and might have made his biggest play when he ran through two blockers to force Newton’s intentional grounding. Their pass rush could be a factor against Minnesota QB Case Keenum, who’s been sacked 17 times in Minnesota’s last six games.
Certainly, Jordan expects a different game that Week 1, when the Saints had one sack – by Jordan – against then-starter Sam Bradford.
”We had a young defense that was still learning,” Jordan said. ”We’ve clearly turned the corner. We’ve clearly turned to the next chapter. Now we’re into the playoffs and we’ve got bigger and better goals.”
SECONDARY CONCERNS: While the Saints’ defense has been far better this season than last, the secondary has looked more vulnerable lately. Against Carolina, they allowed Newton to pass for 349 yards, his second most all season. New Orleans struggled to cover Olsen and versatile running back Christian McCaffrey, who six catches for 101 yards, including a 56-yard score.
END ZONE PROTECTION: While the Saints defense gave up 413 net yards JK Scott Jersey , their ability to keep Carolina out of the end zone was crucial.
”It’s better to hold them to three than six,” Bell said. ”We held them in the red zone and we won the game.”
ROAD WOES: While the Saints won their sixth straight home playoff game and improved to 5-0 in the Superdome in postseason games under coach Sean Payton, they’ve won only one road playoff game in their history. That was during the 2013 season, when they won a wild-card round game at Philadelphia before losing the next week at Seattle.
The Saints’ all time road playoff record is 1-6.

Case Keenum is joining his fifth team in five years and the Denver Broncos are turning to their fifth quarterback since Peyton Manning retired 24 months ago.
General manager John Elway called Keenum "a great fit for us" after the sixth-year pro parlayed a breakout year in Minnesota into a two-year, $36 million deal with Denver.
"Along with that experience," Elway said, "his leadership and competitiveness are what you look for in a quarterback."
Elway, by the way, isn't done looking at quarterbacks.
Elway and coach Vance Joseph were in Norman, Oklahoma, checking out Baker Mayfield's pro day when free agency opened Wednesday. Then they were headed for Los Angeles to watch Josh Rosen's pro day at UCLA on Thursday.
Also, a person with knowledge of the talks told The Associated Press the Broncos were in negotiations Wednesday to trade QB Trevor Siemian to Minnesota, where the Vikings are pursuing free agent Kirk Cousins to be their starter.
The Broncos were busy when free agency opened, keeping linebacker Todd Davis (three years, $15 million); adding cornerback Tramaine Brock (one year, $4 million); finalizing Aqib Talib's trade to the Los Angeles Rams; and trying to move Siemian http://www.greenbaypackersteamonline.com...ams-jersey , who won the starting QB job in Denver each of the last two years.
Keenum is expected to sign his deal Thursday, giving the 30-year-old journeyman the big payday that's long eluded him and taking the pressure off Elway to use the fifth overall pick in the draft next month on a quarterback.
It's no guarantee, however, that Elway won't still use that pick on a QB.
Besides Mayfield and Rosen, other high-profile fixes for franchises with quarterback quandaries such as Denver's include Wyoming's Josh Allen, USC's Sam Darnold, Louisville's Lamar Jackson and Oklahoma State's Mason Rudolph.
Coming off a career-changing season, Keenum was widely considered the second-most attractive veteran QB on the market behind Cousins. And he is a player the Broncos know well because Gary Kubiak, now the Broncos' senior personnel adviser, had him for two seasons while Kubiak was head coach of the Houston Texans.
"Case is perfect for our team, both as a player and as a person," said Joseph, who also worked for the Texans. "He's playing the best football of his career right now and has gotten better with every opportunity he's had. Being around him in Houston, Case is a tremendous person and teammate with strong leadership skills and a terrific work ethic. He'll be great in our locker room."
Keenum, who made $2 million last year, went 11-3 in place of an injured Sam Bradford Brian Gibbons Jersey , leading the Vikings to the NFC championship game.
He threw for more than 3,500 yards with 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His signature moment was that last-second 61-yard touchdown toss to Stefon Diggs that stunned the Saints 29-24 in the playoffs.
The Broncos haven't been back to the playoffs since Manning retired following Denver's 24-10 triumph over the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50 two years ago.
They've cycled through Mark Sanchez, Siemian, Brock Osweiler and Paxton Lynch, while going a combined 14-18.
The Broncos, coming off a 5-11 season, were considered an early front-runner to land Cousins. Minnesota, however, had a sparkling stadium, new state-of-the-art training facility, stacked roster and coaching stability to offer him, while the Broncos' main magnet was Von Miller.
Even though he issued a public plea for Cousins to join him in Denver, Miller is welcoming Keenum to town .
"Looks/Feels right to me!" Miller said in an Instagram post on Tuesday. "We got what we were looking for! Franchise QB that's the perfect fit for DENVER! @johnelway with the deep 3 pointer! Like always! Leeettttss Goooo!!! @casekeenum7 @casekeenum7 Time for me to hold up my end of the deal now!"
Notes: The Broncos placed second-round tenders on two restricted free agents: C Matt Paradis and OLB Shaq Barrett. They declined to offer a tender to WR Bennie Fowler III.

In their first road test against baseball’s top team Womens Ryan Kerrigan Jersey , the upstart Seattle Mariners were no match for the Yankees‘ pitching and power.
Domingo German tossed two-hit ball over a career-high seven innings and Giancarlo Stanton hit one of New York’s four home runs Tuesday night in a 7-2 victory against the Mariners.
”A lot of fun,” Stanton said. ”We were clicking on all cylinders.”
Miguel Andujar and Aaron Hicks each belted a two-run shot off Marco Gonzales in the fifth. Hicks homered for the third straight day and finished with three hits from the leadoff spot as the Yankees (48-22) moved a season-best 26 games above .500.
Coming off a four-hit game, Stanton sent a solo drive to straightaway center field in the first. Aaron Judge had an RBI single in the seventh, and rookie phenom Gleyber Torres added his 14th home run in the eighth.
The first two batters reached against German (2-4) on a double and an error. The rookie right-hander then retired 19 in a row until Nelson Cruz homered in the seventh.
”Dominating, man. Just pounding the zone, blowing it by guys and just showing what he can do,” Stanton said.
After beating Tampa Bay for his first major league win last week, German was impressive once again. Featuring a sharp breaking ball, he struck out nine and walked none while throwing 67 of 96 pitches for strikes.
”I even kicked around sending him back out there for the eighth because he was just so efficient Womens Kareem Hunt Jersey ,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. ”He’s really talented.”
German has 28 strikeouts in his last three starts, a span of 19 innings.
”He was throwing everything. Changeup, curveball – he was commanding everything,” Cruz said. ”He kept us off balance. It seems like we were late with fastballs, early with breaking pitches. It was his day.”
A.J. Cole worked two perfect innings to complete a crisp game that took just 2 hours, 28 minutes. New York has won 15 of 19 overall.
One of baseball’s biggest surprises so far, the Mariners (46-27) lost for only the eighth time in 30 games as they opened a 10-game trip to the East Coast that could serve as an early summer measuring stick. Three games at Yankee Stadium will be followed by three in Boston – the top two teams in the majors.
”We’re going to play our game. Things didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to,” Cruz said. ”We’ll come back positive tomorrow and try to make things better.”
Gonzales (7-4) entered 4-0 with 1.41 ERA in his past six starts but wasn’t up to the task in his first career outing against the Yankees. The left-hander gave up eight hits and a career-high six runs over 6 1/3 innings in his first loss since May 12 at Detroit.
”They’re a good hitting team. I think they had the right game plan tonight. Just sitting off speed, kind of out front Joe Thornton Jersey ,” Gonzales said. ”They got me early in the count and I think kudos to them on their approach.”
The three home runs off Gonzales matched a career high and raised his season total to nine.
”It’s a short porch. It’s a boom box in here,” he said. ”I am going to learn from it and get better. What an experience for me. … I think I was very excited and obviously living out a childhood dream of being able to pitch here.”
STATS AND SUCH
New York improved to a major league-best 27-11 at home – and 17-5 against left-handed starters this season. … Yankees pitchers have a 1.97 ERA in 17 games this month, best in the majors. … New York has won eight of its last 10 vs. the Mariners and is 17-6 against them since June 10, 2014. … New York leads the majors with 118 homers. … Yankees SS Didi Gregorius played in his 700th career game, passing Hall of Fame pitcher Bert Blyleven for the most by anyone born in the Netherlands.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Mariners: RHP Nick Vincent (strained right groin) threw 14 pitches in a scoreless inning Monday for Double-A Arkansas. He is expected to make one more rehab appearance Wednesday with Arkansas before rejoining the Mariners in Boston.
Yankees: OF Brett Gardner (swollen right knee) could return to the lineup Wednesday, Boone said. … Torres slept funny on his shoulder a few nights ago but said he’s fine. Boone would like to get the second baseman a day off soon regardless.
UP NEXT
Mariners: RHP Felix Hernandez (6-6, 5.44 ERA) pitches the middle game of the series Wednesday night. King Felix is 7-2 with a 2.00 ERA over 11 career starts in the Bronx, including 6-1 with a 1.41 ERA in nine outings at the current Yankee Stadium. The six-time All-Star and 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner is 10-7 with a 3.04 ERA and four complete games in 21 starts against New York overall.
Yankees: RHP Jonathan Loaisiga (1-0) gets the ball again after coming up from Double-A Trenton and throwing five shutout innings to win his big league debut vs. Tampa Bay last Friday. With ace Luis Severino (10-2) set to face James Paxton (6-1) in a marquee matchup Thursday afternoon, the Yankees are scheduled to start only pitchers 25 or younger during an entire series of at least three games for the first time since September 2006 in Toronto.

The only thing that’s gone well for Oklahoma’s massive tackle Orlando Brown Jr. this week is a vote of confidence from his Heisman Trophy-winning teammate.
”When are you ever going to watch Orlando Brown run 40 yards down the field?” quarterback Baker Mayfield asked Friday. ”You can watch last year’s tape and see he allowed zero sacks. I’d say that’s pretty important for a left tackle.”
It sure is.
But measures matter Anthony Walker Jersey , too, and Brown’s wretched week will undoubtedly stick in the minds of scouts, coaches and general managers leading up to the draft next month.
The nearly 6-foot-8, 345-pound left tackle managed just 14 reps on the 225-pound bench press Thursday, the lowest total of any lineman who has lifted at the combine this week.
That’s tied for third-worst among offensive tackles since 2000, according to Pro Football Reference.
Things only got worse Friday for the son of former Browns and Ravens right tackle Orlando Brown .
He lumbered through the 40-yard dash in 5.85 seconds. Even by big O-linemen standards, that’s sloth-like slow .
It’s the fifth-slowest time by any player at the combine in the last 16 years, and none of the four who were slower were drafted or started a single game in the pros.
”I’ve been fat my whole life,” Brown said earlier this week. ”I wish I was fast.”
Brown was projected to get drafted in the first couple of rounds Youth Fabian Moreau Jersey , but his bad week in Indy could prove very costly.
His vertical jump was just 19 1/2 inches – nobody has ever gotten drafted with such a bad vertical jump – and his 6-foot-10 broad jump was off-the-charts bad, as well.
Historically, offensive tackles post a tad more than 25 reps in the bench press, run the 40-yard dash in 5.24 seconds and average 28.4 inches in the vertical jump and more than 8 1/2 feet in the broad jump.
He has another chance to impress at his pro day in a couple of weeks.

Wilson spent his first three NFL seasons with Kansas City Chris Wideman Jersey , making 112 tackles. He started 11 games for the Chiefs in 2016, but saw less playing time last season.
Kansas City declined to tender a contract to Wilson last week, making him an unrestricted free agent.
Wilson is reunited with NFL Offensive Player of the Year Todd Gurley, his teammate for three seasons at Georgia.
The NFC West champion Rams are in need of inside linebackers after trading Alec Ogletree to the Giants to make room for cornerback Aqib Talib.

Grant again will join the Thunder’s Big Three of Anthony, Paul George and Russell Westbrook.
Walters said Grant ”is psyched to come back to play with Russ and PG.”

The Detroit Tigers certainly weren’t supposed to be here at this stage of the major league season. Not at all.
Only a season after finishing 38 games behind in the American League Central with a 64-98 record and a veteran roster led by one of the major league’s highest-paid players in Miguel Cabrera Jonathan Bullard Jersey , they’re 36-37 and are right behind Cleveland in the division.
If they can beat the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park on Tuesday night, the Tigers — these no-name Tigers — would be at .500 for the first time since early April.
And it’s not so much how they’re doing it — with surprisingly strong pitching and a better-than-expected offense — but the players they’re doing it with. Even with Cabrera out for the rest of the season with a ruptured biceps tendon, they’ve won five in a row and six of eight with a not-well-known cast.
Not that they care.
“We just go out there and try to get every single win. That’s it. We got close (to the Indians) a couple of weeks ago and then we’re here again,” center fielder Leonys Martin told reporters after a three-game weekend sweep of the White Sox in Chicago. “We only care about getting every single game. That’s it.”
The Detroit bullpen has been especially good behind a surprisingly efficient starting pitching staff, allowing only one run and 12 hits in 17 1/3 innings during the five-game streak –and while walking only one and striking out 20.
Closer Shane Greene saved each of the first four games of the streak, and right-handed setup man Joe Jimenez hasn’t allowed an earned run in 18 of his last 19 games.
Left-hander Matthew Boyd (4-4), who opposes Reds right right-hander Sal Romano (3-7) on Tuesday night, was 6-11 with a 5.27 ERA last season, but he has won his last two starts and has trimmed his ERA nearly two runs per game from a year ago to 3.23.
And then there’s left-hander Blaine Hardy (3-1) Thomas Vanek Jersey , who had only nine career wins going into this season. He was designated for assignment in spring training and wasn’t claimed by any other team but was brought back to Detroit in May and pitched his way into the rotation. He gave up one run in 5 1/3 innings in beating the White Sox 3-1 on Sunday.
Hardy takes pride in the fact that the Tigers are closing in on a winning record.
“Any team wants to be over .500, it’s kind of a mark that lets you know that you’re playing good baseball,” he said. “When we’re within (a few games) of the Indians, that’s a good sign, especially since we go (to Cleveland for a three-game series next weekend). We can go in there and say we have full control over what the standings will be.
“It’s huge. … We need to try to make a push, and I think we’re doing a good job of it.”
The Reds are making a modest push despite losing two of three last weekend in Pittsburgh and being 16 games out of the National League Central lead. They’ve won four of six, in part because of the way Eugenio Suarez and Scooter Gennett are hitting.
Suarez has homered in each of his last two games and is among the NL leaders with 52 RBIs. During an eight-game hitting streak, Suarez is 9-for-29 (.310) with three homers, and he’s closing in on a .300 average — he’s currently at .297.
“He’s been one of the best players in the league http://www.greenbaypackersteamonline.com...use-jersey ,” Reds interim manager Jim Riggleman said of his third baseman. “He’s always played his position well. He’s a smart player and he’s a very well-rounded baseball player.”
Since May 10, Gennett has raised his average from .301 to .336, with a high of .345, by getting hits in 26 of 33 games. He has a five-hit game, a four-hit game and three three-hit games during that run.
None of the Reds have faced Boyd before, and none of the Tigers have gone against Romano.
In Boyd’s last start, he gave up two runs and three hits in five innings of a 5-2 win over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday.
Romano has lost four of his last five decisions but is coming off his best start of the season, limiting the Kansas City Royals to one run and four hits in eight innings of a 5-1 Reds victory.
Both teams had a day off Monday.
The Washington Capitals will raise their first Stanley Cup banner and open their title defense on Oct. 3 against the Boston Bruins – not the rival Pittsburgh Penguins.
Washington did not face the Bruins during its Cup run but has beaten them 12 consecutive times in regular-season play. The Capitals beat the Columbus Blue Jackets, Penguins Brett Favre Jersey , Tampa Bay Lightning and Vegas Golden Knights for the first championship in their 43-season franchise history.
After winning the Cup in Las Vegas and enjoying a parade down Constitution Avenue in Washington, banner night is the next chance for the Capitals to celebrate together.
”It’s gonna be emotional,” captain and Conn Smythe Trophy winner Alex Ovechkin said. ”I’m just happy for this organization. I’m just happy I’m the guy who lift the Cup first and I’m the guy who been in this 13 years, since Day One. Lots of people been here, lots of coaches, lots of players. … I’m happy those guys with me, and we share it together.”
The Capitals will open the rival Penguins’ season on Oct. 4 in Pittsburgh and serve as the road team in one other home opener, at New Jersey on Oct. 11. The NHL announced home openers for all 31 teams on Wednesday and will release the full schedule on Thursday.
The Capitals were there for the Penguins’ banner-raising ceremony in 2016 after losing to Pittsburgh in the second round. Many of the Capitals players who were there for that and hoped it would serve as motivation now get to experience their own night this fall.
”We won on the road, so it’ll kind of turn into a celebration for our fans again Authentic Jonathan Toews Jersey ,” Washington defenseman Matt Niskanen said. ”Just in our rink and stuff, watching that banner go up will be cool for everybody involved.”
The Western Conference-champion Golden Knights open their second season on Oct. 4 against the Philadelphia Flyers. As previously announced, the Devils will face the Edmonton Oilers in each team’s season opener on Oct. 6 in Gothenburg, Sweden, after finishing up exhibition play in Europe.
