Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews does not understand why he was flagged — yet again — for roughing the passer Youth Harrison Smith Jersey , this time while sacking Washington's Alex Smith on Sunday. Matthews think it's an indication that the NFL is "getting soft."Even Smith wasn't quite sure about the call that came late in the third quarter of Washington's 31-17 victory. Neither were other players — or the coaches — from both teams. Matthews broke free into the backfield, grabbed Smith with both arms and took down the QB in a seemingly straightforward manner."When you're tackling a guy from the front, you're going to land on him. I understand the spirit of the rule. When you have a hit like that, that's a football play. I even went up to Alex Smith after the game and asked him: What do you think? What can I do differently?" Matthews said."That's a football play. I hit him from the front, got my head across, wrapped up. I've never heard of anybody tackling somebody without any hands. When he gives himself up as soon as you hit him, your body weight is going to go on him."There are sure to be more questions and more debate around the NFL about what constitutes a penalty on such plays."I had judged that the defender landed on the quarterback, when he was tackling him, with most or all of his body weight, and that's not allowed," referee Craig Wrolstad said, according to a pool report. "That was basically my key — that he landed on him with most or all of his body weight."Matthews immediately put his arms up and slapped himself in the helmet as the flag was thrown. Packers coach Mike McCarthy threw down a play-calling sheet and argued with two officials about the call, yelling while chasing one along the sideline."I think Clay did exactly what he's supposed to do there," McCarthy said. "He hit him with his shoulder. He was coming full speed off of a block. He braced himself. So I was fine with what Clay did."In Green Bay's 29-29 tie against the Minnesota Vikings last week, a potentially win-sealing interception for the Packers was wiped out by a roughing call on Matthews when he hit Kirk Cousins."Unfortunately, this league is going in a direction that a lot of people don't like. I think they're getting soft. The only thing hard about this league is the fines they levy down on guys like me that play the game hard," said Matthews Youth Stefon Diggs Jersey , who actually was not docked pay for that hit on Cousins. "Maybe now pass rushers, guys getting after the quarterback, you'll just have to attack the ball."Smith's take on the hit he took from Matthews?"I'm glad I don't play defense. ... They can't hit us in the head and can't hit us in the knees when we're in the pocket. It's tough. I felt like he was playing football. He's played a long time. Hit me right in the strike zone," Smith said. "That's the new rule they put in, though, with these guys finishing quarterbacks to the ground."The rule preventing defenders from landing on the QB has been around since 1995, but the league's competition committee made it a point of emphasis this year. More than 30 roughing-the-passer penalties were called in this season's first two weeks."Every week," Redskins coach Jay Gruden said, "there seems to be another one that's a little bit questionable."With a heavy sigh, Matthews said: "Nine years, I've been doing it one way in the NFL, successfully, and now it just seems as if that way doesn't work anymore. And that's frustrating."Not surprisingly, Packers teammates agreed with Matthews. Perhaps more surprisingly, so did several members of the Redskins."Oh, my gosh. Look, I'm glad it was for us White Eric Kendricks Jersey , but then when I looked at it, I was like: What else do you want the man to do? Seriously, what else do you want the man to do?" Redskins cornerback Josh Norman said. "When I saw it, it was not malicious, ill intent. It was just a nice form tackle. ... I'm lost by it. I'm pretty sure (Matthews) is frustrated and he has a point." Holding a 13-10 lead coming out of the locker room, the Minnesota Vikings got to receive the second half kickoff from the Arizona Cardinals. The kickoff from Phil Dawson went through the end zone for a touchback, and the Vikings set up shop at their own 25-yard line to start the third quarter of play. The Vikings started the drive with a run by Latavius Murray, and then Kirk Cousins found Adam Thielen near the right sideline for a 16-yard gain and a first down to the 45. The Vikings then found themselves facing a 3rd-and-13 after a couple of attempts by Murray got stopped. Cousins then found Thielen again for an incredible diving catch that gave the Vikings a first down at the Arizona 45.Mike Boone then blasted through for a nice 20-yard gain to move the ball to the Arizona 22-yard line. On the ensuing third down, Cousins dropped back to pass and found Thielen in the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown! Dan Bailey added the extra point, and the Vikings’ lead expanded to 20-10.With his catches on that drive, Thielen went up to 10 catches for 114 yards, giving him his sixth consecutive 100-yard game to start the season. He’s good and stuff. Thanks to a penalty on the kick return, the Cardinals started their first drive of the third quarter at their own 7-yard line. The Cardinals did nothing, and the drive ended with Harrison Smith sacking Josh Rosen at the 1-yard line. Andy Lee came in to punt it away, and Marcus Sherels put together his best return of the year, taking it 20 yards to the Arizona 43-yard line.Latavius Murray kicked off the drive with the (new) longest run of the season for the Vikings, picking up 34 yards and setting up first-and-goal for the Vikings at the 9-yard line. After another run by Murray Kirk Cousins Jersey , Cousins faked a handoff to C.J. Ham, and then ran around the right side for a 7-yard touchdown run!Bailey added the extra point, and suddenly the lead was 17 points at 27-10.Arizona started at their own 25 after another touchback, and they picked up a first down on a pass to Larry Fitzgerald and a run by David Johnson. The Cardinals eventually found themselves facing another third down, and Anthony Harris jumped in front of a Fitzgerald route for an interception! That was the Vikings’ first interception since Week 1, and set the Vikings up at their own 47-yard line.Unfortunately, the Vikings didn’t do much with the turnover, as they went three-and-out following the interception. Matt Wile came in to punt the ball away, and Christian Kirk called for a fair catch at the 13-yard line. A penalty on the Cardinals pushed it back further, and the Cardinals once again started at their own 7-yard line. The Cardinals got a big play to start their drive, as Rosen found Jermaine Gresham on a short screen that picked up 26 yards and got Arizona out of the shadow of their own goal post. A short pass to J.J. Nelson then got the Cardinals near another first down, and they got it on a carry by Chase Edmonds. As we move to the final quarter of play, the Cardinals are looking at 1st-and-10 from their own 46-yard line.We have fifteen minutes of football remaining from U.S. Bank Stadium, and the Vikings lead the Cardinals by a score of 27-10. Will the purple hold on for their third victory of the year?

Somehow Jonathan Jones Jersey Salute to Service , the Texans defense was amazed at how quickly Patriots QB Tom Brady gets rid of the football It is only partially true that football games are won or lost during the week leading up to them – you can have the best battle plan but still have to execute it. That being said, the team that is better prepared for a matchup ahead is often the one to come away from it victoriously. Enter the New England Patriots’ week one opponent, who was beaten by a final score of 27-20: the Houston Texans.Houston, employing ex-New England offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien as its head coach and featuring a staff filled with former Patriots assistants and players, certainly did its homework. However, the team apparently was still caught of guard by just how quickly quarterback Tom Brady was able to get rid of the football as an NFL Films clip captured by independent NFL reporter Dov Kleiman shows:“That ball’s coming out so quick, it’s like: you want to rush, but... Ja'Whaun Bentley Jersey ,” defensive edge Angelo Blackson told his teammates Brandon Dunn and D.J. Reader. Dunn answered that the team just needs to keep rushing. Blackson, who had a deflection that led to an interception early in the contest, then answered that rushing is still a futile endeavor: “If you’re rushing you ain’t never gonna... you know what I’m saying?”Over the years, Brady has become famous for his quick release and how the Patriots are able to use it to counter teams with potent pass rushers – just look at Super Bowl 49 as an example, when New England’s quick strike approach wore down the defensive line. On Sunday against the Texans, the team used a similar approach as Brady’s average time from snap to throw was just 2.57 seconds. The 41-year old was still sacked twice during the game, but the overall pressure was not enough to disrupt the rhythm of New England’s passing offense on a consistent basis: on the day, Brady was pressured only five times in total – the aforementioned D.J. Reader accounted for three of those pressures with two sacks and a quarterback hit Authentic Isaiah Wynn Jersey , with star pass rusher J.J. Watt producing two hits. The rest of Houston’s talented front seven – including Angelo Blackson – came up empty. While New England’s offensive line played a big role in that, so did Brady’s lightning-quick release. One would think that a team with that many former Patriots on its pay roll would not be surprised by the latter. But here we find ourselves for some reason. The good and the bad that came out of week 5 for the Patriots For the most part, Week 5 of the 2018 NFL season was pretty good to the New England Patriots. They started the week off with an excellent Thursday night win over the Indianapolis Colts at Gillette Stadium. They got Julian Edelman back on the field for the first time since Super Bowl LI a year and a half ago. They saw some great signs from the newbie Josh Gordon. They even intercepted Andrew Luck. What could be better than that? But things didn’t stop there for the Patriots. On Sunday, they at last took back first place in the AFC East after the Miami Dolphins stumbled in Cincinnati. New England and Miami now have matching 3-2 records, but thanks to the thumping the Patriots handed the Dolphins in Foxboro last week, tiebreaker rules officially give the top spot to the Pats. All is right in the AFC East, and there’s not much to be upset about right now.But there is one worrisome, unfortunate thing that came out of Week 5. With the day off on Sunday Limited Danny Etling Jersey , the Pats were able to get a look at their upcoming opponent next Sunday night, the Kansas City Chiefs. To this point, all signs indicate that Bill Belichick and company are going to have their hands full with this young team. The 5-0 Chiefs have just about everything going their way right now. Above all else, they have the most exciting quarterback in football with 23-year-old Patrick Mahomes, who has yet to lose a game and can seemingly do just about everything. They have a nearly unstoppable offense with tight end Travis Kelce, running back Kareem Hunt, and wide receiver Tyreek Hill. Their defense has looked questionable, but they’ve come up pretty big a few times this season. And it seems like just about anything Kansas City’s defense does wrong Sony Michel Jersey Salute to Service , Mahomes and the offense make up for it almost instantly. It can’t be denied; the Chiefs are HANDS DOWN the best team in the AFC right now, and they just might be going to Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta come February. After they had their way with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, beating them 30-14, torching the best defense in the league and the team that I had previously picked to go to the Super Bowl, the Chiefs should be every AFC team’s biggest fear.Patriots fans should be very worried about next Sunday’s game, because this is going to be their biggest test of the year. Fortunately, they will be at the wonderful confines of Gillette Stadium once again, where they’ve been very good this year. Thanks to their Week 5 game being played on Thursday Duke Dawson Jersey , they are getting an extra three days rest before they meet the Chiefs. Those factors will benefit them, but it’s hard to tell just how much.New England should have every advantage, but after watching this Kansas City team for five games, it’s hard to imagine any team who plays against them having an advantage. The Pats don’t lose at Gillette Stadium very often, but there might be an unavoidable L coming next week.

FOXBOROUGH Kenny Britt Jersey Salute to Service , Mass. (AP) — For each of the past two seasons, the identity of the Patriots defense didn’t become clear until late in the year. Both times the group had stumbles early, followed by steady improvement. Those leaps were aided at least in part by the increased contributions of newcomers or role players that previously had much smaller roles. That pattern is holding true in 2018 as the Patriots prepare for back-to-back road games at Miami and Pittsburgh that will go a long way in determining their playoff seeding.Earlier this season, New England’s opponents took advantage of a defense that struggled to get pressure up front and that was susceptible to giving up big plays in the secondary. After allowing 300 or more passing yards four times in its first seven games, New England (9-3) has not allowed a 300-yard passer in five straight games. It also has not allowed a 100-yard rusher in nine straight games, going back to Week 3 against the Lions when Kerryon Johnson did it.Those are important markers for a Patriots defense that has had trouble recently at Miami. New England is 17-7 against the Dolphins since 2007, but has lost four of its past five at Hard Rock Stadium.Ryan Tannehill threw for 350 yards and two TDs in the Dolphins’ 20-10 win in the 2015 regular-season finale in Miami. That came a season after Knowshon Moreno rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown in Miami’s 33-20 win to open the 2014 season. Tannehill had two touchdown passes in that game to help the Dolphins outscore the Patriots 23-0 in the second half.“It’s a week-to-week challenge in the season,” Patriots Bill Belichick said of his defense’s evolving identity. “We haven’t established anything against Miami Authentic Cordarrelle Patterson Jersey , so we’ll have to go down and do that on Sunday and we’ll see what happens. Certainly, they’ll be a big challenge for us.”Since allowing a season-high 40 points in their win over Kansas City in Week 6, only two teams have scored more than 17 against the Patriots over the past six games — Chicago (38-31 win over the Bears) and Tennessee (34-10 loss to the Titans). One reason the Patriots defense has tightened has been the improvement of the secondary. That has included key contributions from rookie cornerback J.C. Jackson, who has seen an increased role since Eric Rowe was placed on injured reserve at the end of October.Jackson has two interceptions and contributed to another in last week’s win over Minnesota, tipping Kirk Cousins’ pass into the hands of teammate Duron Harmon in the closing minutes.Linebackers coach Brian Flores, who is calling plays for the defense this season, said Jackson and fellow rookies Keion Crossen and Duke Dawson have earned the trust of their teammates through their work ethic off the field.Belichick said Jackson’s ball skills first caught their attention as an undrafted player in the spring.“He’s just been very dependable and gotten better every day. It’s not always perfect, but he learns from his mistakes and corrects things Limited Jeremy Hill Jersey ,” Belichick said. “It’s taken a little time for him to gain some experience, but he’s doing a good job with it.”Safety Devin McCourty said Jackson’s willingness to be on an island at times will serve him and the team well going forward.“I think we’re starting to feel it that he knows we believe in him,” McCourty said.“We know he’s talented and can play and we’ve got his back. … We had him in some tough situations where we were counting on him to make plays sometimes by himself with no help and he showed up. He had been doing that every time we gave him an opportunity to be out there.”2018 Patriots roster cuts: New England trades Jordan Richards to Falcons for conditional seventh-round pick While the New England Patriots have had plenty of hits in the second round of the NFL draft over the years – Rob Gronkowski, Matt Light, and Deion Branch are the best examples –, they also had some big-time misses. The latest to enter the club of disappointing second-round picks is safety Jordan Richards, whose tenure came to end today. After three rather underwhelming years in Foxboro, the Patriots have traded Richards to the Atlanta Falcons (first reported by the Boston Globe’s Jim McBride):According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter Jordan Matthews Jersey , New England will receive a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2020 for Richards. Entering the final year of his rookie contract on a salary cap hit of $1.18 million, the Stanford product was far from guaranteed a spot on the team even though the Patriots did not add any significant competition during the offseason.Nevertheless, it looks as if they felt the special teamer and part time strong safety was no longer worth keeping around. The move leaves New England relatively thin behind the top three safeties Devin McCourty, Patrick Chung and Duron Harmon: Nate Ebner is primarily a special teamer, while Damarius Travis had a quiet summer. Maybe Jason McCourty will now take over Richards’ role – or an outside acquisition.

Today Joe Barksdale Jersey , the Los Angeles Chargers will take on the Cincinnati Bengals who will be without their starting quarterback Andy Dalton and their star wide out A.J. Green. Via the team’s official Twitter account, we now know who the Chargers will be without as well.Melvin Gordon continues to miss time, but the emergence of Justin Jackson last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers means he likely will not be too badly missed today against the Bengals. Trevor Williams’ strange, disappointing season also continues as it has all year. He will e inactive. Rookie wide receiver, recently called up from the practice squad, Dylan Cantrell will be inactive. Brandon Mebane is still not ready to return. In happier news, second-year offensive lineman Forrest Lamp is finally active again. Perhaps he will even find some playing time against a bad Bengals team. Regardless, it is nice to see him at least making the active roster again. Linebacker Kamalei Correa had one crucial tip for how the Tennessee Titans can best handle the franchise's first trip to London for a regular-season game:Sleep as much as possible on the plane."That's the biggest thing man," said Correa Womens Mike Pouncey Jersey , who has played in London previously while with Baltimore. "Just get some sleep on the plane because if you don't, then you're not going to be in a good place because as soon as we land we're moving already. We're going to be going to meetings and film and walk-through. If you don't get sleep, you're going to be far behind, so you've got to get some rest."The Titans (3-3) practiced at home Thursday before heading to the airport for the nonstop flight to London. Coach Mike Vrabel joked that the reason for the later departure was because his passport didn't arrive until Thursday. The real reason was much more practical for a franchise that has played outside the United States only twice, both preseason games, with the last in 1994 in Mexico City when still the Houston Oilers."We wanted to try to keep everything as normal as possible," Vrabel said. "We have a great facility here. Guys like to sleep in their own beds, they like to see their wives, they like to see their kids. That's part of their routine. I felt like after talking to some people Authentic Tyrell Williams Jersey , you could do it either way."You could go over there and you can spend a week over there, you could arrive Friday morning, and we're excited."The Titans shipped some equipment to London by ship during the summer, taking advantage of having bought extra gear last year when the team spent a week in Arizona between games out West. This is the second trip to London for the Chargers, who played in London in 2008, and for their coach Anthony Lynn. He spent the entire week in England on his first trip. This time, Lynn has checked out how other teams have approached the trip and chose to give his team more time to sleep and game plan before traveling. The Chargers (4-2) stayed in Ohio after beating the Browns last weekend and also are flying to London on Thursday."Hopefully, it works," Lynn said. "Anytime you're on a plane that long http://www.sandiegochargersteamonline.co...ing-jersey , it's not ideal to get off and go through things. But, like I said, we'll get there Friday and we'll have Friday to relax, and Saturday to recover, and go play the game on Sunday."Correa played in London last season while with the Ravens. Safety Johnathan Cyprien, currently on injured reserve, played in London with the Jaguars. Linebacker Will Compton, who is dealing with an injured hamstring, and safety Kenny Vaccaro also have played in London with other teams.Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota has been on plenty of long airplane rides www.sandiegochargersteamonline.com , and he agrees with his fellow Hawaii native that sleep is the best approach to deal with jetlag. Mariota has had enough practice that he says he sleeps well on planes. The Titans will have seats that stretch out to help them sleep. The Titans will have some time Friday night and Saturday for potential sightseeing, and many of the players have family also traveling. Taking care of business is the Titans' main focus. They've lost two straight and need a win going into their bye to keep themselves atop the struggling AFC South."This will be my first time in London, so I'm excited. The team is excited," safety Kevin Byard said. "But the main thing is to go out there and get a W, and that's what we want to go do."Notes: LB Wesley Woodyard (shoulder) practiced fully for the first time since hurting his shoulder Sept. 30. Vaccaro (elbow) was limited for a second straight day. DL Bennie Logan also practiced fully. Compton, LB Derrick Morgan (shoulder) and LG Quinton Spain (right shoulder) did not practice.Follow Teresa M. Walker at teresamwalker Custom Atlanta Falcons Jerseys

The NFL fired down judge Hugo Cruz on Thursday for inadequate performance Authentic Melvin Ingram Jersey , two people familiar with the firing told The Associated Press.Cruz is in his fourth season as an NFL official. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the league has not publicly announced the move.Cruz, a part of referee Carl Cheffers' crew, was involved in a missed call in the Chargers-Browns game that led to a Los Angeles touchdown on Oct. 14. Chargers tackle Russell Okung false-started on the play and nothing was called. But he was fired for his overall work over a sustained period, not just for one specific play. The NFL Referees Association said it would challenge the firing."The NFL has a troubling history of knee-jerk reactions with an eye on public relations, and clearly it has not learned from past mistakes," NFLRA Executive Director Scott Green, a former referee http://www.sandiegochargersteamonline.co...ams-jersey , said in a statement. "The NFLRA will protect the collectively bargained rights of all officials and will challenge this reckless decision through the grievance process."Cruz's firing was first reported by FootballZebras, a website dedicated to officiating which said it's the first in-season firing by the league of an official because of performance in the Super Bowl era. There has been a wave of criticism of officiating this season by team executives, coaches, players and the media. Several times, teams have been told by the league that a call was missed, although that has happened in past years, too.The league does hand out fines to players for egregious hits Womens Austin Ekeler Jersey , even when they have not been penalized in a game.In all, the NFL has 121 officials and 17 officiating crews. Because there are extra officials not working each week, filling Cruz's spot shouldn't be an issue. This is a great time of year to be thankful for what we have, where we have been, and what the future holds. Although the Chargers have lost their way a bit in recent years, the month of December still holds such incredible promise! This advent calendar is an attempt to hearken back to these days of December joy. Each day will bring a new advent from the Bolts’ history that makes it wonderful to be a Chargers fan.Dec. 21: A History of Chargers Vs. RavensWell, this is a match-up that we don’t see very often. Although both teams are AFC powers Womens Darius Philon Jersey , the Ravens are still a fairly new team, so there’s not much history between the two. That said, the stakes are real this weekend (and moreso for the Ravens than the Chargers), as both teams have reason to want a win. The Chargers can smell the blood in the water, after finally giving the Chiefs the broken nose they’ve been asking for. The Ravens are trying to galvanize the team (and fanbase) behind their new QB Lamar Jackson, as it is almost a foregone conclusion that the Flacco years are over. A miraculous race to the postseason, despite the odds Authentic Casey Hayward Jersey , would save coaching jobs, put fannies in seats, and give the fans something to be excited about in 2020 and beyond. Here’s what CBS.com says about the matchup:Indeed, no one is completely sure what the match will look like, but it should be very entertaining regardless. The Ravens are a good team; better than their record. The Chargers are a very good team, but frankly have had luck on their side as of late. What does History tell us?The Chargers won the first two matches of this series, but their loss to the Ravens in 2015 gave Baltimore the edge.Ravens lead this series 6-5.The Ravens also lead the series in points scored:Baltimore Ravens 231Los Angeles Chargers 226This week’s game gives the Chargers the chance to even up the overall record AND it is very likely that the winner will also hold the trophy for most points in this lifetime matchup. These teams have never met each other in the playoffs Womens Derwin James Jersey , though that is indeed a possibility this year. For that to happen, the Ravens would have to pull an upset win over the Chargers here, and the Steelers would also have to lose or tie their next two games. That still wouldn’t guarantee a meet-up, and the Chiefs will have a say in that. But this is a year for unusual outcomes, so we shall see!-Jason “Sorry, they’re Ratbirds this week” Michaels NFL Outlet

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Latest on lawsuit asking NFC championship do-over (all times local):1:25 p.m.A longshot lawsuit aimed at a possible do-over of the NFC championship game is bogged down in a jurisdictional issue: whether it belongs in Louisiana state court or in federal court. The NFL wants it in federal court. Plaintiffs want it in state court.A one-hour federal court hearing Monday didn't immediately resolve the issue. U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan was to meet with attorneys for the NFL and two New Orleans Saints season ticket holders Monday evening. At issue is the officials' failure to call interference or roughness penalties when a Rams player leveled a Saints receiver with a helmet-to-helmet hit at a crucial point. The Rams went on to win in overtime and are set to play the Patriots in the Super Bowl on Sunday. In their first playoff game since a heartbreaking loss in the divisional round last year in Minnesota www.neworleanssaintsteamonline.com , the New Orleans Saints were eager to start erasing the bad taste that the “Minneapolis Miracle” had left in their mouth. Facing them were the defending Super Bowl Champions Philadelphia Eagles, armed with enough momentum to fill a tank.Trailing 14-0 in the blink of an eye, the Saints would not allow another point the rest of the game, as they defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 20-14 to stamp their ticket to the NFC Championship game. Cornerback Marshon Lattimore was instrumental with two interceptions. The second one, for all intents and purposes, sealed the game.New Orleans will now face the Los Angeles Rams in the friendly confines of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, yet another rematch. You can bet that the team will be ready for that one.One damper on the victory, defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins tore his Achilles tendon in the first half and is likely done for the season. But tonight, no doubt the team and the city of New Orleans will celebrate the Saints going to their third NFC Championship Game New Orleans Saints T-Shirt , just one victory away from playing in Super Bowl LIII next month in Atlanta. Here is how it all unfolded today:1st HALF1st QuarterEagles win the toss and defer. Alvin Kamara returns the kickoff to the Saints’ 35-yard line and Drew Brees is intercepted on the first pass of the game by Cre’von Leblanc.Eagles take over at their 24-yard line and get into Saints territory with a methodical drive. Nick Foles finds Jordan Matthews for a 37-yard touchdown pass to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead after the extra point.Saints take over at their 25-yard line after a touchback butgo three-and-out and have to punt. A nightmarish start of the game for New Orleans. From their 25-yard line, the Eagles drive into Saints’ territory in three plays. When I received the alert on my phone that Dan Arnold would be inactive vs the Bucs Authentic Ted Ginn Jr Jersey , I sent the following text message to a friend of mine: “The Saints are going to mess around trying to establish the run against a team that is fully aware it’s coming and are going to find themselves down 10-3 halfway through the second quarter.” While I’m a fan of Dan Arnold’s skill set, it wasn’t the fact that the Saints would be without the tight end that made me pessimistic about the team; it was what the decision to deactivate Arnold signified to me. To me, it showed that Sean Payton was intent on establishing the run and trying to grind out a win given the poor weather conditions.Even as short as a decade ago, this could have been thought of by most of the football world as a sound strategy: in a game with adverse conditions, take the air out of the ball and lean on your run game. Nowadays, being a “run-first” team leads to sluggish starts and forcing your team to come back in games. A bit of background on some of the stats I looked at: most are pretty basic (Yards Per Carry, Yards Per Attempt), but a couple are a bit more advanced (though still pretty simple) such as First Down Rate (% of plays that result in a first down and Success Rate. A “successful” play is one that picks up 50% of the yards to go on 1st down, 70% on 2nd down, and 100% on 3rd/4th down. When I looked at the play calling, I looked at “early down” play calling, meaning just 1st and 2nd down. I did this because there is more left to the coach’s discretion on 1st/2nd down. 3rd down play calls are generally determined by yards to go. The last bit of background needed is that passing is generally more efficient than rushing: the Saints average 8.4 Yards Per Attempt with a 58% success rate on the season when passing. When rushing, the Saints average 4.1 Yards Per Carry with a 54% success rate.Digging into the data from the Bucs game, the Saints were far too committed to the run, particularly on 1st downs and 2nd and longs. Rush vs PassTypeCountAverageSuccess RateTypeCountAverageSuccess RateNow this is just a simple count of every early down play call from the Bucs game, but it’s still interesting to see that despite the fact that the Saints were averaging more than a yard and a half more per play and a success rate of 55% passing the ball compared to just 36% rushing, they still ran more than passed. The following table shows every early down run from the Bucs game and the overall stats. A couple of notes: I did not keep track of goal-to-go situations since the distances and play calls change dramatically near the goal line. I also counted any penalties that occurred as actual plays (for example Womens Ken Crawley Jersey , the Saints had 2 holding penalties on runs so those are charted here).Bucs Early Down RunsEarly Down RunsStartingYardsEndingSuccessEarly Down RunsStartingYardsEndingSuccessBucs Runs DistanceDistanceCountYPC1st Down %SuccessDistanceCountYPC1st Down %SuccessThe distances used were short (3 or fewer yards to go), medium (4-6 yards to go), and long (7+ yards to go). Amazingly, despite averaging just 2.7 yards per carry, the Saints ran the ball 21 times on early downs from a distance of 1st/2nd and 7+. They only passed the ball 20 times TOTAL on early downs all game. The passing stats are as follows:Bucs Early PassesEarly Down PassesStartingYardsEndingSuccessEarly Down PassesStartingYardsEndingSuccessBucs Passes by DistanceDistanceCountYPA1st Down %SuccessDistanceCountYPA1st Down %SuccessRemember before how the Saints ran the ball 21 times on 1st/2nd and long despite a 29% success rate? The team passed just 16 times in the same situations, despite the fact that they were successful almost twice as often on pass plays. And while the Saints struggled through the early part of the Bucs game, overall for the game, they averaged the same yards per drop-back as the Patriots have this season. Looking back on the game as a whole, it’s easy to see why the Saints struggled so much prior to Taysom Hill’s blocked punt. Despite the fact that the passing game had a success rate of 54% prior to the blocked punt, the Saints still had 8 early down runs which averaged 0.5 YPC with just one of those runs earning a successful grade. I also decided to look back at a game where the Saints were more successful offensively to see if the play calling changed at all. The following stats and tables are all from the Saints’ 45-35 victory over the Rams. Rams Run vs PassTypeCountAverageSuccess RateTypeCountAverageSuccess RateOverall, there really wasn’t THAT much of a difference in how the Saints ran the ball. They were slightly more efficient, but the key difference was that the Saints were more dedicated to the passing game and were more efficient doing so. The split is even more favorable to the passing game as this includes two runs when the Saints were simply trying to kill the clock. When the Saints were focused on scoring, they passed the ball 26 times on early downs compared to 22 runs, and even that might not be enough. Rams Run vs Pass by DistancePlay TypeCountYPC1st Down %SuccessPlay TypeCountYPC1st Down %SuccessWe can see here that the Saints run/pass split on 1st/2nd and long basically flipped, and that made a huge difference in their offensive success. Rather than the 16/21 Pass/Run split in the Bucs game, the Saints had a 23/20 Pass/Run split against the Rams. But even in this more efficient decision, Sean Payton still had plenty of room to pass more in these key situations. The Saints were still almost twice as successful passing the ball on 1st/2nd and long as they were rushing it Womens Alex Anzalone Jersey , yet the split was still almost 50/50. Think about it another way: in the most explosive offensive game of the season, the Chiefs and Rams ran the ball 20 and 21 times TOTAL during the game. So the Saints ran the ball 21 times in inefficient situations on 1st and 2nd down while the Chiefs and Rams, in a game they knew they’d need to score nearly every possession, ran the ball 20 times each during the entire game. The last thing I decided to do with these games was to look at the 1st/2nd down play calls and results on each series where the Saints were forced to punt or kick a field goal. Basically, I wanted to see what play calls led the drive to stall. They are as follows:Bucs: 1st Down: Incomplete Pass; 2nd Down: 10 yard holding call on run; 2nd down: 3 yard passBucs: 1st Down: 0 yard run; 2nd Down: -7 yard runBucs: 1st Down: -1 yard run; 2nd Down: 8 yard passBucs: 1st Down: 2 yard run; 2nd Down: 7 yard passRams: 1st Down: -4 yard run; 2nd Down: 7 yard passRams: 1st Down: 2 yard run; 2nd Down: 2 yard runRams: 1st Down: 3 yard run; 2nd Down: 2 yard runOf the seven Saints drives that stalled (outside of turnovers), six started off with a run on 1st and 10 (all of which were unsuccessful). The one that started with a pass turned into a 2nd and 20 when the Saints were called for holding when trying to run on 2nd and 10. Four of the seven series featured runs that resulted in negative yardage. Overall, in these 7 sequences featuring 15 total plays (including the penalty), there were 10 runs (all unsuccessful) for -11 yards including the 10 yard holding penalty. This is obviously a small sample size, but this is a trend that’s been proven true in studies over recent years. The Saints were passing the ball with incredible efficiency vs the Rams which helped them build a 35-14 lead. When they decided to try and sit on the lead and run the ball, their next 3 possessions resulted in 2 punts and a field goal. Against the Bucs, the Saints tried to come out and run the ball given the expected weather conditions. Their first 6 rushes were unsuccessful, and the Saints scored 3 points in the first half.Passing the ball more isn’t a simple cure-all for some of the inefficiencies in the Saints offense over parts of the last 2-3 games. Nor is running the ball a surefire detriment to the team’s Super Bowl hopes. But if the Saints are going to win the next 6 games to secure home field advantage and then beat 3 good-elite teams to win the Super Bowl, they can’t afford to give the other team the analytical advantage when it comes to smart play calling on early downs. The Saints very well might be the best overall team in the NFL, and taking the low-hanging fruit that is passing more on 1st and 10 and 2nd and long could help propel them these next 6 games. My heart cannot take too many games like that, but this season is just starting to feel special, isn’t it?A win is a win, and it was another roller coaster of an adventure with plenty of ups and downs along the way. Here are a couple that stood out.Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY SportsUp: Drew BreesLet’s get this one out of the way.Drew seems to be making history game-by-game nowadays. This week Womens Terron Armstead Jersey , he threw his 500th touchdown pass of his career and managed to finally shake the monkey off his back that was beating the Baltimore Ravens. Drew has joined Brett Favre and Peyton Manning as the only three quarterbacks in NFL history to beat all 32 NFL teams.Individually, Drew finished the game 22/30 for 212 yards and 2 TDs. He has still yet to throw an interception in the 2018 season. A big “up” for Drew.Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY SportsUp: Sean PaytonSay what you will about the botched option play at the end of the Saints long, opening drive, but it’s easy to see the logic behind the call. Coach Payton called this game like a playoff game, making aggressive decisions and pushing all of the right buttons as the game went on. He went it on fourth down multiple times, successfully executed a fake punt, and caught the Ravens defense off-guard late with aggressive passing plays. You could tell that this game was important for Sean and Drew, and they played like it.Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY SportsUp: Demario DavisIt’s been a while since a Saints individual defensive player made the “Ups” list, but Demario Davis absolutely deserves it.He’s been one of the brightest spots (along with Cam Jordan and the constantly-improving Marcus Davenport) of the Saints defense all season. He finished today’s game 6 total tackles, including a huge tackle-for-loss on a big third down stop. He’s playing at a Pro Bowl level, and it’s time for the league - and Saints fans - to take notice.Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY SportsDown: Defensive Play-CallingWhatever Dennis Allen is doing for the majority of games this season isn’t working. It’s time to make in-game and in-season adjustments.Rushing two down linemen in the red zone isn’t working. Playing Ken Crawley way off the line to allow opposing receivers to sit in front of him for easy completions isn’t working. It’s time to make adjustments. The Saints needs to either change their defensive scheme to fit the performance of their current personnel, or they need to change their personnel.Patrick Peterson, anyone? www.nflshopoutlet.com/baltimore-ravens

Athletic apparel companies have straddled Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 34 Womens the entertainment and cultural worlds  for years partly with their emulation of black culture — think Run-DMC's Adidas shoe deal in the wake of the group's rap hit "My Adidas" Adidas Falcon Damskie and Nike's "Air Jordan" campaigns featuring Michael Jordan and Spike Lee. This has created a billion-dollar industry and the cultural challenge of how to appeal Nike Air Max 2017 Femme to minority and youth communities as well as to the country's white, sometimes conservative, majority. But the companies and major sports leagues have been careful not to stray into real Nike Air Max 90 Uomo politics, famously symbolized by Jordan, who reportedly said Republicans buy shoes, too. Business boomed as Nike Air Max 97 Damen black athletes became spokesmen and spokeswomen, but questions arose over how much the companies invested financially in black communities, compared with  how much they made by exploiting African-American trends. The relationship began in the 1980s, when Nike, Adidas, Reebok and Converse became staples of black fashion, and African-American Nike Air Max 270 Damen youth sought Nike Air Max TN Mujer to emulate the stars of the day, like Jordan, Run-DMC and other figures associated with the burgeoning hip-hop culture.
