After Yadier Molina’s two homers led the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-2 win at Milwaukee Saturday Eli Manning Giants Jersey , manager Mike Matheny spoke hopefully of a bounce the win would create.
His instinct proved correct Sunday when St. Louis capped a rough road trip with an 8-2 rout that allowed it to salvage a split of a four-game series with the National League Central leaders and pushed it within 4 1/2 games of the Brewers.
The Cardinals open a six-game homestand Monday night in Busch Stadium with the second of four straight series against first-place teams, facing the Cleveland Indians.
St. Louis (40-36) scored just seven runs in its first three games in Milwaukee, whiffing 34 times, with 15 occurring in a 2-1 loss Friday night. It fanned another 11 times on Sunday but mixed in 10 hits, including a three-run homer by Jose Martinez to cap a five-run fourth inning that turned momentum for good.
While the Cardinals enter the series with hope that they are turning things around, Cleveland (43-33) did so during the last week. Its 12-2 rout Sunday of Detroit was its seventh straight win, moving it eight games ahead of the Tigers and Minnesota Twins in the American League Central.
The Indians also appear to have the mound advantage for the series opener with Mike Clevinger (6-2, 3.00 ERA) against spot starter John Gant (1-2, 4.39).
Clevinger’s last start was one of his best this year. He notched 10 strikeouts Tuesday night in 7 2/3 innings of a 6-3 win over the Chicago White Sox at Progressive Field. Clevinger has lasted at least six innings in five straight starts, solidifying his place in a deep rotation.
“His fastball had really good life,” Chicago manager Rick Renteria told mlb.com. “He was keeping the ball down below the zone. You saw him get a lot of checked swings on some of his breaking pitches … he’s got a pretty good repertoire and was able to command consistently in the zone consistently throughout the whole ballgame.”
Gant is starting in place of Michael Wacha, who took his 8-2 record to the disabled list last week after suffering an oblique strain Wednesday in Philadelphia. The former Atlanta Braves prospect is 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA in three starts this year, leading some to wonder why Dakota Hudson (10-2 at Triple-A Memphis) or Daniel Poncedeleon was not picked to replace Wacha.
In his last start, Gant lasted 5 1/3 innings on May 25 in Pittsburgh P.J. Hall Jersey , losing 8-1 despite fanning seven and walking none. He was charged with four hits and three runs.
Gant has made one career start against Cleveland, lasting two innings in a 2016 game for the Braves and permitting one run and three hits with two strikeouts.
Carlos Martinez (3-4, 3.24) starts Tuesday night for St. Louis opposite Corey Kluber (11-3, 2.10). Jack Flaherty (3-2, 2.50) faces the Indians’ Shane Bieber (2-0, 2.45) in a battle of rookie right-handers on Wednesday night.
Paul George said all the right things when asked if he’d consider staying with the Oklahoma City Thunder instead of leaving in free agency this summer.
”They honestly check the boxes where I needed those boxes to be checked from what a player wants and needs out of a front office, out of a medical group, out of teammates, out of a coaching staff,” George said Saturday, a day after the Thunder lost their first-round playoff series to Utah 4-2. ”I mean, honestly, I can’t say it any more than that. They checked the boxes on what needs to be checked.”
George’s decision will largely determine if a rare gamble by general manager Sam Presti pays off. The Thunder bucked their tendencies and went for big splashes before this season, trading for George and Carmelo Anthony to join Russell Westbrook in hopes of rejoining the NBA’s elite.
It didn’t work – or at least Billy Price Jersey , it hasn’t yet. Now, the Thunder and their fans are in an eerily familiar position. Kevin Durant had good things to say about Oklahoma City in 2016, but he left for Golden State. Now, George has a $21 million player option for next season. If he declines, he will become a free agent.
It would be a huge loss for the Thunder. George, a 6-foot-9 forward, was an All-Star who averaged 21.9 points and 5.7 rebounds this season and was among the league leaders in steals.
George’s camp showed interest in the Los Angeles Lakers last year before the Thunder made the deal with the Indiana Pacers to get him; Los Angeles is near his hometown. George said going home would be enticing, but that wouldn’t be the determining factor. He said he’d talk to Presti, Westbrook and coach Billy Donovan before making a decision.
”It will definitely be the opportunity on knowing, you know, team, personnel, and ultimately like what team will be assembled,” he said. ”That’s the only thing that it will come down to.”
George believes the team has something on which to build. The Thunder started off 8-12 but went 40-22 the rest of the way to earn the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference. Westbrook averaged a triple-double for the second straight year and Steven Adams evolved into one of the league’s best centers.
But the team never fully recovered after defensive stopper Andre Roberson was knocked out for the season with a ruptured left patellar tendon.
Westbrook said that was hard to overcome.
”I’ve always been very Quenton Nelson Jersey , very big on Andre,” Westbrook said. ”He’s one of my favorite players, just because the things he brings to the game. I know a lot of people across the world, even you guys (media) doubted Andre many, many times about his shooting and all that stuff. But to me, man, the type of guy he is, the things he brings to the game is a huge, huge impact on our team and what he brings to the table.”
Compounding the pressure on the Thunder to keep George is the fact that the players they traded to get him – Victor Oladipo and Domantas Sabonis – have been so good for Indiana. Oladipo had an All-Star season and Sabonis is a solid contributor.
Anthony was Oklahoma City’s No. 3 scorer this season, averaging 16.2 points per game. His playing time dwindled in the playoffs and he wasn’t happy. In Game 5, the Thunder rallied from most of their 25-point deficit against Utah with Anthony on the bench. In Game 6, backup Jerami Grant actually got more court time than Anthony.
Donovan said he won’t need to mend fences with Anthony.
”I think there was a lot made of Game 5, him wanting to be out there, and I respect that Harold Landry Youth Jersey , and I said that about his competitiveness. But I think going forward, Carmelo has been a total pro, and he’s been a total team guy.”
Anthony will be 34 before next season starts, but he still feels he can play at a high level. He became more of a catch-and-shoot scorer this season instead of the isolation specialist he had been. He said prefers to play his old way and said he has no interest in coming off the bench. Though he is due $28 million next season, he seemed unsure of his future.
”It’s something I really have to think about, if I really want to be this type of player, finish out my career as this type of player, knowing that I have so much left in the tank and I bring so much to the game of basketball,” he said. ”And how long I want to continue to do this, I think that’s also a thought process as well.”
In the end, for all Westbrook’s electrifying play and the two major moves, the Thunder have three playoff wins the past two years and haven’t advanced past the first round since Durant left.
”Our biggest challenge to try to figure out I think in this offseason is our consistency,” Donovan said. ”That has been a problem. That’s going to be obviously my major focus. I think it needs to be our team’s major focus.”

A Ram truck ad that used a speech by Martin Luther King Jarvis Landry Browns Jersey , Jr., is drawing a backlash.
The ad shows people doing service-oriented tasks set against audio of King’s speech, which urges people to be ”great” by serving the greater good. It was supposed to highlight the volunteer program Ram Nation.
But it was criticized by viewers and ad experts alike for forging too tenuous a connection with the civil rights hero.
On Twitter, most people expressed the idea that using King’s speech to ”sell trucks” crossed a line between a heartfelt message and exploiting emotions just to push a vehicle.
”They pushed it over the edge,” said Kelly O’Keefe, a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Brandcenter. ”You wanted to root for it because the cause is good, but it just didn’t end up fitting the brand, so you ended up feeling a little bit manipulated.”
”The use of MLK to promote Ram trucks strikes many people as crass and inappropriate,” said Tim Calkins, a marketing professor at Northwestern University.
Watching at home, some viewers expressed distaste for the ad as well.
”I liked being reminded of Martin Luther King’s speech (but) I’m not sure it was fitting for a truck commercial,” said Kimberly Stites, who was watching the game in Gretna Josh Jackson Packers Jersey , Nebraska. ”I would have liked it better if they had said something like, `This reminder of all that we can be brought to you by ….”’
Fiat Chrysler said in a statement that it worked closely with the King estate on the ad.
The firm managing King’s intellectual property, Intellectual Properties Management, said in a statement that it approved the ad because it embodied King’s philosophy.
On Twitter, the King Center in Atlanta said neither it nor Bernice King, King’s daughter, are in charge of licensing King’s speeches or other intellectual property.
The ad is not the first one to use a King Speech. Telecom Alcatel used King’s ”I Have a Dream” speech in a 1999 ad that was also approved by IPM.
That ad shows King giving his most famous speech to an empty Mall in Washington D.C. to illustrate the idea that ”before you can touch, you must first connect.”

Eds: An earlier version of this story mistakenly referred to Ram trucks, which are no longer affiliated with the Dodge brand.
Anthony Lynn left Texas Tech in 1992 for a life in the NFL, he was only six class hours shy of earning his degree.
Although he won two Super Bowl rings as a running back before beginning a coaching career that eventually put him in charge of the Los Angeles Chargers last season, Lynn never forgot about missing his college graduation.
On Saturday, the Chargers’ 49-year-old head coach will take that long-delayed walk to get his diploma when he receives his bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies at UNLV.
”Football has always been my No. 1 priority, and sometimes that’s good Mike McGlinchey Jersey Youth , sometimes that’s bad,” the Chargers’ head coach said Friday after running a workout with their rookies and undrafted free agents. ”But I chose football over education. I thought, at some point, `No more excuses. Just go back and get it done.”’
While he led the Chargers to a 9-7 record last season, Lynn was also hitting the books. He spent the past 18 months completing his coursework while simultaneously navigating his first head coaching job.
Lynn didn’t say much about his studies to his Chargers assistants or players, but he strategized like any good coach to manage his workload. With the help of a counselor, Lynn used a five-week down period in last summer’s schedule to line up his daily educational goals and deadlines for the following year.
”It requires you to be a master planner,” Lynn said with a grin.
He recently completed his 30-page capstone research project about the challenges and pitfalls facing athletes as they make the transition into post-competitive life. After starting out with the goal of learning more about the mental health of athletes with head injuries, Lynn eventually took 30 hours of online classes in subjects such as sociology, public health and psychology.
”Mental health is broader than what I thought,” Lynn said. ”Things like identity crisis. Things like boredom with athletes post-career, and how that can lead to other sicknesses that are sometimes fatal. So that’s probably the biggest thing I learned.”
The seeds of Lynn’s return were planted in 2014 while he was on Rex Ryan’s staff with the New York Jets. Dave Szott, Lynn’s good friend and a former Jets lineman who became a coach and executive with the club Authentic John Ross Jersey , finished his degree 15 years after leaving Penn State with the encouragement of his own wife, Andrea.
”I remember she looked at me and said, `Coach, you should do the same,”’ Lynn recalled. ”`There’s no reason why you shouldn’t do that, no excuses.’ And that just gave me a little push and inspired me to go back, or at least investigate it.”
Lynn put it off for a couple of years while he moved with Ryan to Buffalo and attempted to land his own head coaching job. He eventually connected with an educational firm that has expertise in such endeavors, and he committed to his studies in earnest in 2017.
”I said, `You know what? It’s now or never,”’ Lynn recalled with a smile. ”And then I become a head coach.”
But with the Chargers’ encouragement, Lynn decided to continue his educational pursuits. He did most of his coursework remotely, but also went to UNLV recently for face-to-face discussions with his professors.
Lynn also was motivated by his highly educated children. His daughter, Danielle Walter Payton Jersey , is receiving her master’s degree in business administration from the University of North Texas next week. His son, D’Anton, a former Penn State defensive back, will miss the graduation ceremony at UNLV because he’ll be at work with the Houston Texans in his new job as an assistant coach.
”They were happy,” Lynn said. ”I’m not the butt of the jokes anymore when I go to one of their graduations. They would always say stuff like, `That’s why you didn’t graduate.’ I’d talk about how hard I work. `That’s why you didn’t graduate.”’
Lynn wasn’t planning to participate in UNLV’s graduation ceremony until he realized what it could mean to other athletes, coaches and professionals facing similar educational challenges. His mother and daughter will be in attendance in Las Vegas along with Chargers owner Dean Spanos and his wife, Susie.
”I decided to walk, because if it could inspire one person, then it’s worth it,” Lynn said. ”Dave Szott inspired me. Maybe if I inspire one, then it’s worth it.”

New Jersey’s casinos and racetracks are waiting for the starter’s gun to begin offering sports betting now that the state Legislature has approved a bill to legalize it.
All eyes were on Gov. Phil Murphy on Thursday Derrius Guice Redskins Jersey , immediately after the state Assembly and Senate unanimously passed a bill to allow sports betting three weeks after winning a U.S. Supreme Court case that cleared the way for them and all other states to do so.
Casinos and racetracks itched to begin taking bets on baseball, basketball, soccer and other sports. But the Democratic governor would not signal whether he would sign the bill – or even when he might decide.
”He said he wants to act quickly, but the legislation will be subject to the same thorough review that all legislation sent to him for signature is subject to,” said his spokesman, Dan Bryan.
While some top lawmakers said they expected Monmouth Park, a racetrack near the Jersey shore in Oceanport, to begin taking bets Friday, others said they expected Murphy to consider the bill during the weekend before acting.
Adding to the confusion was an action the legislators took before approving the bill: They stripped out a provision that would have prohibited any casino or track from beginning to offer sports betting before the bill was signed. Republican state Sen. Declan O’Scanlan said that technically enabled Monmouth to begin taking sports bets right away.
John Heims, a spokesman for the track, said it would not take any sports bets Thursday night, adding it ”should know soon when we are starting.” Other first-day movers would likely include Atlantic City’s Borgata casino.
Three weeks ago, New Jersey prevailed in a Supreme Court case that struck down a federal law limiting sports betting to just four states. Now, any state is free to adopt laws legalizing it, and analysts expect most to do so. A report this week by Eilers & Krejcik Gaming predicted that only six states will not have approved sports betting by 2023.
Former state Sen. Raymond Lesniak Rashaan Evans Youth Jersey , who led the fight for sports betting for eight years, predicted it will help turn around Atlantic City, where casino gambling had been in decline. The state’s casinos and racetracks would be able to offer sports betting once the governor signs the bill.
”Today is the day that New Jersey gets the same benefits that Las Vegas does,” he said. ”During the Super Bowl or the NACC Tournament, in Las Vegas you can’t get a hotel room and Atlantic City is a ghost town. This will change that.”
Three of the professional sports leagues were not happy over the lack of ”integrity fee” payments they say would help them police betting patterns and called for better information sharing. In a joint statement, Major League Baseball, the NBA and the PGA Golf Tournament called on Murphy to ”fix” the bill before acting on it.
”The legislation does not include basic protections to mitigate risks to the integrity of sports and to ensure fairness for New Jersey consumers,” they said. ”The bill allows for the creation of non-transparent betting markets that deny sports leagues critical tools to monitor betting activity and conduct integrity investigations. Additionally, the bill does not require casinos or the regulator to notify sports leagues of potential match fixing or other improper conduct.”
The bill would allow Atlantic City casinos and racetracks, including Monmouth, the Meadowlands and Freehold Raceway, to offer sports betting. A provision also would allow it at the former Atlantic City Race Course if that facility were to reopen.
The bill sets the tax rate for casinos at 8.5 percent, with an additional 1.25 percent payment to help market Atlantic City. The 1.25 percent add-on fee for tracks would be split among the host community and the county in which the track operates. Internet bets would be taxed at 13 percent.
Internet betting would begin 30 days after the rest of the law takes effect.
The bill also clears away obstacles for any of Atlantic City’s casinos to offer sports betting, adding clauses to allow the Borgata, Caesars Sean Lee Jersey Womens , Harrah’s, Bally’s and the Golden Nugget to offer sports bets despite ownership or partial ownership of professional sports teams.
A last-minute change allowed the Golden Nugget to take sports bets, despite the fact that its owner, Texas Billionaire Tilman Fertitta, also owns the NBA’s Houston Rockets. The bill previously shut the Golden Nugget out of sports betting, but a change allowed it to offer bets on sports other than basketball.
Fertitta thanked New Jersey for making the change and said he eventually hopes to convince state regulators to let the Golden Nugget take bets on basketball teams other than the Rockets, as Nevada regulators allow.

Follow Wayne Parry at Devon Still describes his daughter as ”your typical, soon-to-be 8-year-old.” Nothing’s typical about Leah Still , who faced long odds against reaching that eighth birthday. Or about her father, a former NFL defensive lineman who retired after last season and has immersed himself in a second career – helping other families deal with childhood cancer.
”We call it recycling our pain,” Still said.
Still retired last December after another foot injury sidetracked his career, deciding that at 28 years old, it was time to move on to something else. It was a difficult moment – he’d played football since age 13 and spent three years with the Cincinnati Bengals and one with the Houston Texans.
”The most successful people know when it’s time to call audibles,” he said.
Even when that means giving up a promising career that began when he was a second-round pick out of Penn State.
”Since I got to the NFL in 2012, I feel it’s been a roller coaster Christian Kirk Cardinals Jersey ,” Still said in a phone interview from Houston, where he now lives. ”I tell people all the time that my life has been like climbing a mountain. When I got to the top of the mountain, the view wasn’t what I thought. Making it in the NFL wasn’t what I thought. I had so many injuries.”
The biggest surprise came in June 2014, when Leah – then 4 – was diagnosed with stage four of a rare cancer that affects primarily infants and young children. She was given a 50/50 chance to survive.
Still shared her story through videos and interviews. Sports fans as well as people who couldn’t name an NFL team became engrossed in her struggle. Surgeons removed a tumor from her abdomen. She got chemotherapy, radiation and experimental treatments. There were setbacks and very dark days when the treatments seemed to be inadequate.
More than three years later, the cancer is in remission and Leah is ”just trying to be a kid again,” as her father describes it. In addition to attending school, she’s tried gymnastics and cheerleading. She’s signed up for acting classes.
And Still is trying to recycle those difficult years into helping other parents going through the same experience.
He formed the Still Strong Foundation in 2015, helping families dealing with childhood cancer to cover non-medical bills so they can devote more time and resources to fighting the disease. He works with other foundations such as the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation trying to find new treatments.
He’s also gone back to school as part of his second career.
Still got a degree in criminal law at Penn State with the idea of helping juvenile delinquents when his football career ended. He’s working on a master’s degree in leadership at the University of Houston that will help him navigate corporate culture as he advocates for families.
At times when he’s sharing his story with families, those memories of Leah’s ordeal return fresh. He’s gotten to know children who don’t survive the disease.
”That’s tougher,” he said. ”I feel sometimes we suffer from survivors’ remorse.”
Leah has a photogenic smile that brightens the room – people saw it in Still’s tweets during her treatments – and reminds Still of his priorities.
”Honestly, to this day I just sit there and stare at Leah,” he said. ”I meet so many kids that pass away from this. I may have lost something I wanted so bad – being in the NFL – but I still have my daughter and that’s so much more important.”
During his daughter’s ordeal in 2014, Still got home from a Bengals’ practice and saw a local television story about Lauren Hill, the Mount St. Joseph freshman who played basketball with an inoperable brain tumor. He decided to visit Lauren and brought her a Bengals jersey as a gift.
”They sat and talked forever Aaron Rodgers Jersey Youth ,” said Lauren’s mom, Lisa. ”It was almost like a bond, like they’d known each other longer than just meeting. I distinctively remember her saying she felt like she knew him forever. Their conversation just flowed.”
After Hill scored two baskets in her first game, she visited Still at Paul Brown Stadium and gave him one of her game jerseys . Soon after, Leah met Lauren at a Bengals game. The families formed a bond as they crossed paths at various events.
”Lauren’s story came out and, in kind of a weird way, you feel alone because you’re being barraged with a lot of media coverage,” said Lisa Hill, who works with The Cure Starts Now Foundation . ”As a parent, it’s nice to have that camaraderie and know you’re not alone.”
It was the same for Still, who was taken aback when Lauren gave him the game jersey.
”I knew they understood what I was going through,” Still said. ”Talking to Lauren and her parents put life in perspective.”
A perspective that’s carrying him into his second career.

MINNEAPOLIS — Neither New England nor Philadelphia is a tropical paradise Sam Hubbard Jersey , so for the Patriots and Eagles, the Minnesota winter weather has been pretty normal for them. That’s a good thing as both teams head into their Super Bowl LII meeting on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium trying to treat it like just another 60-minute game.
After the media circus they endured Monday in St. Paul, the players for both the Patriots (15-3) and the Eagles (15-3) welcomed the opportunity to get back to some semblance of normal game week preparation and to focus on the football, even if it’s in a new place.
“We’ve got to go out and practice and kind of get away from the madness,” said Philadelphia defensive end Fletcher Cox on Wednesday after the Eagles practiced at the University of Minnesota. “I just treat it as a regular game week. Things I would do at the facility, I’m doing here.”
One thing the Eagles did successfully at home and on the road all season was pressure the opponent’s quarterback, and when the Patriots have faltered in two Super Bowl losses to the Giants in the past decade, a relentless pass rush has contributed. But the highly touted Eagles defense, which did not allow a point after the Vikings’ opening drive of the NFC title game, is wary about putting too much of their attention on Patriots star Tom Brady.
“It’s Tom plus 10 guys on the field. We can’t just focus on one guy DJ Moore Panthers Jersey , if we’re going to be real about it,” Cox said. “I think we have to focus on their whole offense, because they’ve got a lot of great players. We have to go out and be ourselves. We’ve got to go out and do the little things right and not beat ourselves in order to be victorious.”
New England tight end Rob Gronkowski, who missed the second half of the AFC title game win over Jacksonville due to a concussion, is slated to play.
“Rob’s a tough guy. Obviously, this isn’t something you can just fight through,” said Brady.
While the Patriots offense has revolved around Brady since their first Super Bowl win in 2002, the defense has been one of constant evolution, and the unit adopted yet another new look late in the regular season when linebacker James Harrison came on board after he was jettisoned by the Steelers.
“When you’re in a system for as long as he’s been, there are a lot of things that are habits that get ingrained Davante Adams Packers Jersey , which they should be. Some of those things carry over. Some of them kind of don’t,” Belichick said of Harrison, who has played 178 of his 193 NFL regular-season games for Pittsburgh. “He’s done a great job of trying to separate them and do what we’ve asked him to do.”
While the Eagles will be looking for the franchise’s first Super Bowl title, having lost the big game after the 1980 and 2004 seasons, there may be more pressure on the Patriots, who will be seeking their sixth title and their second in a row, knowing that the coaching staff will look significantly different next season. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and defensive coordinator Matt Patricia are both widely expected to be head coaches in Indianapolis and Detroit, respectively, next season.
“I realize and I understand and I appreciate the talent in the coaches in our building. I’m grateful for the opportunity to even be coached by them,” said Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola Logan Woodside Jersey , sounding very much like he was saying goodbye. “Whatever their opportunities are in the future, I’ll be excited for them.”
There’s one more opportunity for them on Sunday. And it sounds plenty exciting.
SAINT PAUL, Minn. — It’s widely known in the hockey world that the game gets much more difficult in the playoffs. With the Minnesota Wild on the verge of clinching their sixth consecutive trip to the postseason, their life just got much tougher.
As they prep for their regular-season home finale on Monday against the Edmonton Oilers, the Wild are having to rapidly adjust to life without both of their top defensemen.
They’d already lost Jared Spurgeon with a groin injury a few weeks ago, and now the word out of Minnesota is that Ryan Suter is out with a fractured fibula, suffered in Saturday night’s 4-1 loss to the Stars in Dallas.
Suter, who has been the team’s mainstay on the blue line since coming to Minnesota as a free agent in the summer of 2012, has been averaging nearly 27 minutes of ice time per game and shouldering an increased load with Spurgeon missing in recent weeks. He went hard into the boards during the loss in Dallas and did not return to the ice.
“That’s a tough one for us. I don’t think I need to explain. We all understand how important he is for our team,” Wild left winger Zach Parise said. “You don’t like to see your teammates or anybody go down like that.”
On Easter Sunday Adidas Derick Brassard Jersey , the Wild made it clear that they expect to have a hole to fill on defense, recalling rookie blue-liner Carson Soucy from their Iowa AHL team. He is expected to make his NHL debut versus the Oilers.
Minnesota sits third in the Central Division with four games to play, and according to one numbers-crunching website, has a better than 98 percent chance of making the playoffs. The Wild are widely expected to open the postseason on the road against the Winnipeg Jets, who have clinched second place in the Central.
The Oilers have three games remaining and come to Minnesota for their final road game of the season having lost four in a row, including a 3-2 decision to the Flames on Saturday night in Calgary.
After a slow start, the Oilers put up a fight against their provincial rivals but came up short in what has become the storyline in an overall disappointing season.
“We decided to play harder and compete a little bit more after the first (period). We can’t complain about the effort or the opportunities we created,” Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. “Numerous two-on-ones and three-on-twos where it’s on the offensive player’s sticks and they’re not going in.
“The other thing that comes into play once again for our team is the power play. We had five opportunities to at least get one to pull us back in it and we never did.”
The Oilers will be looking to sweep the season series with the Wild. Edmonton won 3-2 in Minnesota in December and 4-1 when the teams met in March in Edmonton.

Police say several items have been returned after they were stolen from Chicago Bears first-round draft pick Roquan Smith’s car in Georgia Derwin James Youth Jersey , but not his Bears-issued iPad.
Athens-Clarke County Police public information officer Epifanio Rodriguez tells the Chicago Tribune a fingerprint found in the linebacker’s car identified the suspect and detectives recovered some of the property, but not the iPad.
The Bears said Monday that they remotely wiped the password-protected tablet.
Rodriguez says Smith was ”ecstatic” when detectives notified him. Rodriguez says authorities expect to obtain arrest warrants soon and charges will be filed in the case.
Smith called police Saturday to report the thefts, including his Georgia helmet and Georgia Bulldogs jerseys.

Information from: Chicago Tribune, Connor Hellebuyck bounced back in a big way, just as the Winnipeg Jets were expecting.
The 24-year-old goalie turned aside every shot Minnesota could muster, shoving the Wild to the brink of elimination.
Mark Scheifele scored both goals for Winnipeg and Hellebuyck made 30 saves for his seventh shutout this season, as the Jets beat the Wild 2-0 on Tuesday night to take a 3-1 lead in the first-round playoff series.
”You knew, five to 10 minutes into that game, he was right and feeling good Rashaad Penny Youth Jersey ,” Jets coach Paul Maurice said.
Scheifele scored with 28 seconds left in the first period, spoiling a fine performance on the other end by Wild goalie Devan Dubnyk, and tacked on an empty-netter with 11 seconds remaining.
The Wild, now without star left wing Zach Parise because of a broken sternum suffered late in Game 3, must now win in Winnipeg in Game 5 on Friday night to extend their season.
”Certainly can’t fault us in trying. It’s a disappointing finish,” said Dubnyk, who stopped 26 shots. ”It just shows you, too, you never know which plays are going to be the difference in the game.”
The Wild were livid about one in particular Josh Rosen Jersey , when Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey delivered a vicious-looking cross-check to Eric Staal’s neck that knocked Minnesota’s leading scorer to the ice during a Wild power play that went unnoticed by the officials. Morrissey had an assist on Scheifele’s goal and also helped thwart a Wild breakaway later in the game, and a red-faced coach Bruce Boudreau said afterward that Morrissey should have been ejected.
”They decided not to call it because we were already on the power play,” Boudreau said. ”It cost us the game.”
Across the hall, Morrissey adamantly defended his action as accidental.
”He’s a big guy, and my stick ended up getting up a little bit on him,” Morrissey said. ”I would never try to do that to anybody. I’m not a dirty player.”
Morrissey apologized to Staal later in the game, but that wasn’t any consolation for him or the Wild.
”I’m the tallest guy on the ice. He cross-checked me in the neck. There’s not much more you can say. Everyone saw it. I don’t know how no one with stripes saw it,” Staal said.
After a six-goal outburst in Game 3 that prompted Maurice to pull Hellebuyck after two periods, only his second early exit of the season Cheap Christian Kirk Jersey , the Wild had trouble generating the same kind of organized and relentless attack. The Jets closed up the holes they gave the Wild through the neutral zone in Game 3, and the Wild simply weren’t as crisp with the puck.
Hellebuyck, fittingly, was named earlier in the day one of the NHL’s three finalists for the Vezina Trophy that’s awarded annually to the best goalie in the league.
”It definitely added a little more hop to my step. I don’t know if it changed my game too much because I prepare the same way and I do the same things every day,” Hellebuyck said. ”I guess it’s just a nice milestone that me and my family will enjoy.”
The crowd, fired up about the opportunity the Wild had to even the series, produced plenty of collective groans after difficult saves by Hellebuyck after jeering him in Game 3 with the customary ”Sieve! Sieve! Sieve!” chant. One of Hellebuyck’s most important stops came in the opening minutes of the second period, when a 3-on-1 rush by the Wild set up Matt Dumba for a wrist try denied with a sprawling glove stop.
After a tightly whistled game here Sunday night, there were only three penalties called.
Scheifele was part of the sandwich hit with Ben Chiarot late in the third period of Game 3 on Parise that led to a broken sternum for the Wild’s all-time postseason scoring leader John Ross Youth Jersey , a stunning setback for the home team revealed about four hours before Game 4.
The agitation in the arena spiked a little later in the first period, when the Jets kept the puck in the Wild zone after a failed clearing attempt and Kyle Connor fed Scheifele with a slick give-and-go pass for the 1-0 lead right before the first intermission.
Then Hellebuyck and the Jets defense took over.
”That’s the guy who’s been there all year for us,” Morrissey said.
NOTES: Jets defenseman Tyler Myers was out with a lower-body injury suffered in a collision with Marcus Foligno in Game 3. He was replaced by Tucker Poolman, a native of Iowa who played in college at North Dakota, on Winnipeg’s third blue line pairing with Chiarot. … Scheifele had a goal and five assists in four games against the Wild during the regular season. … Tyler Ennis took Parise’s spot, skating with Matt Cullen and Charlie Coyle on a new-look third line. Jason Zucker and Jordan Greenway joined Mikko Koivu, and Staal centered Nino Niederreiter and Mikael Granlund. Coyle, Zucker and Niederreiter are without a point in the series.

Tom Brady passed for three touchdowns and 337 yards A.J. Green Youth Jersey , and the New England Patriots cruised past the Tennessee Titans 35-14 on Saturday night to advance to their seventh consecutive AFC championship game.
New England (14-3) will host the winner of Sunday’s divisional matchup between Jacksonville and Pittsburgh.
It was Brady’s 10th career postseason game with at least three TD tosses, moving him past Joe Montana for the most in NFL history. James White caught a touchdown pass and ran for another, and Danny Amendola had 11 catches for 112 yards.
The Titans (10-8) took an early 7-0 lead, but New England scored 35 straight points to take control.
Marcus Mariota completed 22 of 37 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns, but was under duress for most of the second half. He was sacked eight times, a Patriots playoff record. New England also held Derrick Henry to just 28 yards rushing on 12 carries.
New England’s victory came on the heels of a week filled with drama following reports of turmoil involving Brady, coach Bill Belichick and team owner Robert Kraft. None of that showed on the field Saturday.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – With Nick Foles engineering several long drives, Jake Elliott converting three field goals Uchenna Nwosu Chargers Jersey , and the defense getting stingy in the tightest spot, Philadelphia moved into the NFC championship game with a victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
Foles directed brilliant marches of 74 and 80 yards in the second half – one into the whipping wind, the other with it – and Elliott atoned for missing an extra point by converting from 53 yards at the end of the second quarter, 37 and 21 in the second half. Then, the Eagles (14-3) held when Atlanta (11-7) got to the 9-yard line with a first down, and to the 2 on fourth down.
When Matt Ryan’s final pass sailed over Julio Jones’ head in the end zone, Philly could celebrate its first playoff victory since the 2008 season.
Next Sunday, the Eagles will host either Minnesota or New Orleans for the conference crown. The Eagles last made the Super Bowl in the 2004 season, losing to New England.

LAS VEGAS — Thanks to Monday night’s 4-1 victory over Colorado Joe Mixon Bengals Jersey , it’s finally okay to use the “P” word around Vegas Golden Knights coach Gerard Gallant.
That’s “P” as in playoffs, a word that Gallant had banned from being used during the season as he stressed that the expansion Golden Knights stick to the old one-game-at-a-time mantra and not get caught looking ahead, even when Vegas had a 12-point lead in the Pacific Division.
With an “x” placed by their names in the standings emblematic of having officially clinched a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Golden Knights (48-21-7) will try to finish their historic regular-season on a strong note starting with Wednesday night’s game against the resurgent Arizona Coyotes (26-39-11) at T-Mobile Arena.
“When you start the season in training camp your goal is to make the playoffs,” Gallant said. “That was a goal but that really wasn’t something we were looking at from day one to be honest with you. It’s a great feeling. Last night was a great feeling.
“But, you know what? We’ve still got two weeks of the regular-season left. We’ve got to play hard every shift. We’ve got to play hard every game and try and get more points and be on a roll when we go into the playoffs.”
Vegas is only 7-5-3 in its last 15 games and had lost four of its previous six contests (2-2-2) before Monday’s win over the Avalanche.
“We haven’t played a full 60-minute game in a while,” left winger Pierre-Edouard Bellemare said following practice Tuesday afternoon. “We are going to be playing better and better teams, so we are going to have to find a way to do that, because in playoff time James Washington Jersey , it’s those moments where you are a little bit not as good, those are the moments that cost you the most.”
Vegas holds a five-point lead over the surging San Jose Sharks for first place in the Pacific Division with one meeting still remaining between the teams Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena. The Golden Knights are 27-9-2 on their home ice.
“Having the home advantage (in the playoffs), especially with our fans, is the most important thing that we have,” Bellemare said. “We feel comfortable playing at home and having that extra game is important. So all those games starting (Wednesday) are important for sure.”
This is the final of five contests between Vegas and Arizona, who last played on Dec. 3 at T-Mobile Arena. The Golden Knights won all four of the previous meetings but two of them were decided in overtime.
“We played them a lot in the early parts of the year,” said Coyotes center Derek Stepan, who has eight points in the last five games. “I think we’re a different group in here. I know for our group, this is an important game for us Baker Mayfield Jersey Elite , we want to make sure that we don’t let them get all five.”
The Coyotes, who began the season 0-10-1 and were 9-27-5 heading into 2018, have played much better of late with a 14-7-2 record in their last 23 games, including an impressive 4-1 victory at Eastern Conference leading Tampa Bay on Monday night.
This is the fifth contest of a season-long six-game, 5,862-mile road trip for Arizona, which concludes Thursday at Los Angeles.

For most point guards Davante Adams Packers Jersey , grabbing 16 rebounds to achieve a milestone would seem a daunting task.
For Russell Westbrook, it seemed a foregone conclusion.
The Thunder star entered Wednesday’s regular-season finale against the Memphis Grizzlies needing 16 rebounds to become the first player to average a triple-double in multiple seasons. He had four rebounds at the end of the first quarter, then snagged seven in the second in just under nine minutes. He had five rebounds in the first 2:42 of the third quarter to reach his goal, and the crowd gave him a standing ovation.
He finished with just six points, but he had a career-high 20 rebounds and 19 assists in a 137-123 win. He finished the season with averages of 25.4 points, 10.1 rebounds and 10.3 assists.
”I’m very, very thankful and blessed, man, to go out and compete,” Westbrook said. ”Like I’ve said many, many times, I don’t take this game for granted. I don’t take going out on the floor and competing for granted. When God has got something planned, ain’t nobody who can stop it.”
After averaging a triple-double and setting a single-season NBA record with 42 triple-doubles last season, he added 25 more this season Breeland Speaks Jersey , and the Thunder won 20 of those games. He ranks fourth in NBA history with 104 career triple-doubles, three behind Jason Kidd.
”His numbers help them win,” Grizzlies coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. ”They’re not meaningless numbers. You get numbers on a bad team or in a blowout game or whatever it is, but he shows the consistency every single night, going out and performing at a high level. There’s very few guys, maybe a handful of guys that play with that level of intensity, with a burning fire, to be the best player on the floor every single night. He’s one of those guys.”
Westbrook had season lows of two field goals made and nine shot attempts against the Grizzlies as he focused on other aspects of the game.
”Russ is going to play the game,” said Paul George, who scored 40 points Wednesday night. ”He’s one of the best to do it at that position. He was looking to get guys going early and saw how the game was unfolding. He stayed with it.”
Longtime teammate Nick Collison said Westbrook continues to amaze him.
”I’ve seen him lock in, and I want to really appreciate how good of a player he is and the production he’s had these last two years,” Collison said. ”It’s not just that. I’m not too much into the statistics. They’re amazing, but seeing him put the organization on his back and lead the organization through a tough time and the way that he’s able to show up every night and produce and compete and lead the team has been really fun to watch.”

The Bills‘ defensive front quickly took shape Tuesday, when Star Lotulelei agreed to sign with Buffalo Minkah Fitzpatrick Dolphins Jersey , and Kyle Williams chose to return for a 13th season by saying the he never entertained any thought of retiring.
A person familiar with the situation confirmed to The Associated Press that Lotulelei reached an agreement to sign a five-year contract with the Bills. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the signing the former Carolina Panthers starter won’t become official until the NFL’s business year opens on Wednesday.
The agreement was first reported by ESPN.com.
A few hours later, the Bills announced agreeing to a one-year, $6 million deal to re-sign Williams, who revealed his plan all along was to return.
”As eloquently as I can put it, I haven’t exhausted myself in pursuit of what my dream is of playing this game, or playing for this organization and chasing being a champion,” Williams said during a conference call. ”Buffalo is my home. It’s where I want to be. It’s where I want to win. And I couldn’t be more excited.”
The moves bulk up Buffalo’s defensive front by filling both tackle starting positions a day before the start of free agency.
Just as important, the Bills retained a steadying presence in their locker after losing veteran center Eric Wood, who was diagnosed with a career-ending neck injury in January.
Williams was an unquestioned leader on a patchwork, rebuilding team that exceeded expectations with a 9-7 record and ended a 17-season playoff drought. The 34-year-old is so highly regarded, coach Sean McDermott would grow emotional in discussing what the player meant to the team.
”It’s hard not to gravitate toward a guy like that, because of who he is as a person more so than anything,” McDermott said of Williams in December. ”How could you not like the way he plays and appreciate that, right?”
Williams returns to his familiar spot in the middle Hayden Hurst Ravens Jersey , which he’s held since being selected in the fifth round of the 2006 draft. And he’ll be playing alongside the 28-year-old Lotulelei, who takes over after Buffalo traded Marcell Dareus to Jacksonville in October.
”I’m all for bringing on as many good football players as we can,” Williams said, referring to Lotulelei.
Listed at 6-foot-3 and 311 pounds, Lotulelei was a five-year starter with Carolina after being selected by the Panthers in the first round of the 2013 draft out of Utah.
The native of Tonga is reunited with McDermott, who was Panthers defensive coordinator before taking over in Buffalo in January 2017. Bills general manager Brandon Beane is also familiar with Lotulelei and played a role in drafting him after previously serving as Panthers assistant GM.
Lotulelei has forced two fumbles and has 11 1/2 sacks in 76 career games, and was voted to the NFL all-rookie team in 2013. His future in Carolina was uncertain after the Panthers signed defensive tackle Kawann Short to a five-year, $80 million contract extension last offseason, and also used a first-round pick for Vernon Butler last year.
Williams is a one-time All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowl selection. He showed no signs of slowing last year, with 41 tackles and three sacks in starting all 16 games. Overall, his 43 1/2 sacks are the most by a defensive tackle in franchise history.
Williams has no expectation of taking on a diminished role after leading Buffalo’s defensive linemen by playing 758 snaps last year.
”I prepare myself to play as many as I possibly can because mentality-wise, I feel like we’re a better football team when I’m on the field,” he said. ”I’m coming back to play. I’m not coming back to say, `Oh Ty Montgomery Jersey Youth , hey listen, I’ll just play 25, 30 snaps a game and let you guys fight over the rest.”’
Buffalo’s defensive front seven has numerous needs with starting linebackers Preston Brown and Ramon Humber eligible to become free agents. The Bills finished 26th in yards allowed and gave up 140 or more yards rushing eight times, including a 10-3 loss to Jacksonville in the AFC wild-card playoff game.
Lotulelei’s addition is the latest bold move made by Beane in reshaping Buffalo’s roster since being hired in May to replace Doug Whaley.
Beane has already completed two trades over the past week in dealing quarterback Tyrod Taylor to Cleveland and sending starting offensive tackle Cordy Glenn to Cincinnati. Buffalo moved up nine spots in the first round by acquiring the Bengals’ selection, 12th overall, as part of the Glenn trade.
The deals continued strengthening Buffalo’s bid for selecting one of several highly regarded quarterback prospects in the first round next month. The Bills have two picks in each of the first three rounds, including the 22nd selection.
Williams backed the moves.
”It goes back to really believing in and trusting what Brandon and Sean are doing,” Williams said. ”I believe in their vision of what they’ve trying to build. And so for me, I’m on board with what they’re doing.”

鈥?Bills center Eric Wood’s plans to announce his retirement on Monday were sidetracked due to issues arising over what he is owed over the final two years of his contract Leonard Williams Jersey Youth , a person with direct knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press.Instead of announcing his retirement in front of a large gathering of family, friends and teammates, the nine-year veteran instead spent less than two minutes reading from a prepared statement in which Wood stressed he is still on the team’s roster.“Thanks to everyone who supported me throughout my career. And because of that, I am here today,” Wood said. “I’m sure there are a lot of unanswered questions. I hope to address those at a later date. Thanks, and go Bills.”With that, Wood stepped down from the stage Deion Sanders Jersey , picked up and kissed his daughter, Grace, and walked away behind a curtain.Wood will never play again after tests revealed he has two discs he said are “dangerously close to my spinal cord.”According to the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement, teams can ask for a portion of bonus money to be returned if a player retires before his contract expires. There is, however, a gray area if a player retires as a result of a career-ending injury. The person said the question over bonus money was the reason Wood held off on announcing his retirement as had been initially planned shortly after the player learned of his diagnosis following Buffalo’s 10-3 loss to Jacksonville in the AFC wild card playoff on Jan. 7.The person spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity because neither Wood nor the team commented on the matter that delayed the start of the news conference by nearly an hour.Wood has been informed by doctors that the injury is so severe he would no longer be cleared to play 鈥?even with surgery or further treatment.Bills general manager Brandon Beane declined to get into specifics when speaking with reporters. He said the lengthy delay in starting the news conference was the result of Wood’s late arrival and also due to a phone call the player had with his agent.Beane acknowledged a complication by saying the team has no room under the current salary cap to release Wood until the NFL’s 2018 business year opens in mid-March.“It’s tough. There’s all sorts of things when you’re doing roster management and all that,” he said. “He’ll be on our roster for a while until we figure things out.”Wood was entering the final year of his contract before signing a two-year extension in August. He has shied away from using the word retirement since news of his neck injury first surfaced Friday. In a separate development Sam Darnold Jets Jersey , the Bills announced defensive line coach Mike Waufle has retired after completing his 20th NFL season and first in Buffalo. The Bills filled Waufle’s spot by promoting defensive line assistant Bill Teerlinck. They also hired Aaron Whitecotton to take over as Teerlinck’s assistant.Rather than focus on Wood’s uncertain status, Beane was more interested in discussing the impact the 31-year-old had as a team leader and helping the Bills reach the playoffs for the first time in 18 years.“This is Eric’s day. It’s about him and a heck of a career he had,” Beane said. “It’s bittersweet, but we’re just trying to celebrate his career.”The news conference was held in the Bills’ practice facility rather than the team’s smaller media room to handle a crowd of about 100 people 鈥?not including members of the media 鈥?attending the event. Guests included Wood’s former teammates such as quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, and current Bills, including defensive tackle Kyle Williams and running back LeSean McCoy.Also on hand were members of his charitable foundation, The Eric Wood Fund Darius Leonard Youth Jersey , as well family members of people his foundation has supported.Wood opened the news conference by apologizing for the delay. He said was “floored” when informed of the severity of his neck injury.Wood said he sustained “a stinger” for the first time in his career during a 20-16 loss at Cincinnati on Oct. 8, and then a second one the following game. He said tests showed no significant damage.Wood is from Cincinnati and spent four seasons playing at Louisville before being selected by the Bills with their second of two first-round picks in the 2009 draft. Wood earned a starting job entering his rookie season and appeared in 121 career games, including one in the playoff.Wood was also popular in the community for his charitable work, and was the team’s Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee in 2015 and ’16.Bills fans rallied to Wood’s support by donating more than $30,000 to Wood’s foundation, with the money going toward Buffalo’s Oishei Children’s Hospital.AP NFL website: nning’s starting streak with end.The two-time Super Bowl MVP has been benched by the Giants. Even up to this day Baker Mayfield Jersey , it still isn't unusual for pro football players to become pro wrestlers when their NFL ambitions don't work out as planned 鈥?you need look no further than the likes of Baron Corbin and Roman Reigns. And while聽Vince McMahon聽announced recently that he will be relaunching the XFL in 2020, it's going to be a very long shot for any WWE wrestler, college/pro football background or none, to make an XFL roster especially since McMahon promised a "no gimmicks" version of the pro football vision that failed in such epic fashion in 2001.Still, we thought it would be fun to take a look at five WWE wrestlers whom we think would be right at home in the XFL, should Vince not have an issue having some of his wrestlers take up football roster space.Dean Ambrose Now this one's going a bit on a limb, as Dean Ambrose doesn't have any football playing experience that we know of. But that Lunatic Fringe persona of his could make him a great addition to any XFL defense, and at multiple positions at that. He's definitely got the unhinged personality to wreak havoc as a linebacker, but since he's about 20 pounds lighter than the average NFL LB, we can also see him playing the safety position and adding some lunacy to an XFL team's defensive backfield. Just expect a plethora of penalties to be called against him, because even as a babyface Jaire Alexander Jersey , Ambrose tends to play by his own rules. Already a dozen NFL teams have new quarterbacks, half of them starters. And next month’s draft features a deep class of QB prospects, a half-dozen of which could hear their names called in the first round.
Why such a remarkable run on prime-time passers?
”They’re hard to find,” Denver Broncos general manager John Elway said after introducing Case Keenum as his fifth quarterback since Peyton Manning’s retirement just two years ago. ”It’s a tough spot to play. There are a lot of expectations. It’s a hard position. There are a lot pressures on it. You’ve got to play with consistency and there are a lot of people that rely on that position.”
So, proven passers and projects alike see teams jockeying to throw multiple millions their way.
The harbinger of the ”Great Quarterback Shuffle” of 2018 came during Super Bowl week when word got out that the Kansas City Chiefs were sending Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins, freeing Kirk Cousins to become a free agent in his prime, one who would rewrite the conventional contract.
Cousins made the media rounds at the Super Bowl, where he secretly scouted out the city he would soon call his own.
Minnesota surged past Denver, Phoenix and New York as Cousins’ desired destination after the Vikings decided to let all three of their veteran quarterbacks hit the open market.
While Cousins was working out a three-year, ground-breaking (fully guaranteed) and record-setting ($28 million average) deal in Minnesota , the Broncos Taven Bryan Jaguars Jersey , Cardinals and Jets were picking through the Vikings’ quarterback bin:
-Coming off a $2 million deal in Minnesota, Keenum commanded a two-year, $36 million deal in Denver after leading the Vikings to an 11-3 mark and the NFC championship game.
–Sam Bradford, whose injury opened the way for Keenum’s breakout season, signed a one-year, $20 million with the Cardinals, who lost Carson Palmer to retirement.
–Teddy Bridgewater, once the Vikings’ established starter before a devastating knee injury two years ago, signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the Jets, who also re-signed Josh McCown for one year at $10 million.
Trevor Siemian Walter Payton Jersey Youth , who blew up the Broncos’ quarterback plans two straight summers by beating out 2016 first-round flop Paxton Lynch, heads to the Vikings as Cousins’ backup after going 13-11 in Denver.
Leading the Bills to their first playoff appearance in 18 years wasn’t enough for Tyrod Taylor to secure his long-term future in Buffalo. The Bills traded Taylor to Cleveland, which traded DeShone Kizer to the Green Bay Packers, where he’ll back up Aaron Rodgers.
AJ McCarron finally gets his chance to prove himself after spending four seasons in Andy Dalton’s shadow. He signed a two-year deal with the Bills and said it makes no difference if his new team adds more competition by selecting one of the highly regarded quarterback prospects in the draft next month .
”I try not to ever waste any mental thought on it because it’s something I can’t control,” McCarron said. ”… You can either let it affect you in how you go about your work and let that define you. Or you can change everybody’s thought process. My mindset is to change anybody that’s had any doubt.”
Keenum said his mindset won’t change should Elway draft a quarterback such as Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, Wyoming’s Josh Allen, USC’s Sam Darnold, UCLA’s Josh Rosen, Louisville’s Lamar Jackson or Oklahoma State’s Mason Rudolph.
”I’ve been around long enough to know that anything is a possibility in this league. I was a starting quarterback when a team drafted somebody No. 1 overall and traded a bunch of draft picks. I know how that goes,” Keenum said, recalling when the Rams selected Jared Goff in 2016.
Teams are also doling out big bucks for backups just two months after watching Nick Foles‘ MVP performance in leading the Eagles past Tom Brady’s Patriots in Super Bowl 52 while starter Carson Wentz watched from the sideline.
Mike Glennon went from being the Bears‘ backup to Arizona Dallas Goedert Youth Jersey , Chase Daniel went from the Saints to Chicago and Tom Savage moved from the Texans to New Orleans.
None of them got the kind of money Jimmy Garoppolo did after serving as Brady’s backup for several seasons and then getting traded to San Francisco. After sparking the downtrodden 49ers, Garoppolo was rewarded with a record-breaking deal that averaged a whopping $27.5 million a season.
That mark stood until Cousins’ deal came in at an average of $28 million, which is sure to fall when the Packers and Rodgers work out a new contract in the next year or so.
In several weeks, the NFL will be flush with a new crop of quarterbacks, some of whom may one day make today’s jaw-dropping contracts look a little less eye-popping.
They may have to start out as a backup such as Patrick Mahomes II last year in Kansas City or Rodgers did in Green Bay when Brett Favre was still going strong.
Rodgers said that although there’s an ever-widening schism between college offenses and the ones the pros run, today’s QB prospects are in many ways more prepared for the NFL because the coaching is better at all levels.
”I think you’re seeing more spread offenses in college, which give you the run-pass option a lot of times. You’re seeing the NFL incorporate some of that. But in general, I think there’s just so much more education about quarterbacks that allows these guys to be more ready to play than, say, myself or Alex Smith or Jason Campbell were in 2005 when we got pi.

The Los Angeles Rams exceeded every expectation and stunned the NFL during their surge to an 11-win season and the NFC West title.
That didn’t make the Rams’ opening-round playoff loss to Atlanta any easier to bear – at least not while it’s still fresh for the players and coaches who led the turnaround to get there.
”It’s a good start Jason Witten Jersey Womens , a great start,” receiver Robert Woods said Sunday. ”But we’ve got to keep building.”
The Rams’ comeback season is over after a 26-13 loss to the defending NFC champion Atlanta Falcons on Saturday night. The players still seemed stunned by the abrupt conclusion to a remarkable turnaround season as they cleaned out their lockers at the team’s training complex.
”It’s hard, because we had a good thing going,” guard Jamon Brown said. ”For it to come to a halt and stop like it did, it’s tough. But we learned that we have the guys to do it. It was a matter of having the scheme, having the right coaches, having the right attitude. We’re going to get better.”
After 13 consecutive non-winning seasons and 12 straight non-playoff seasons, the Rams (11-6) suddenly had it all under 31-year-old Sean McVay, who became the youngest head coach in league history to reach the playoffs. Los Angeles improved by seven wins on last season’s performance while moving from 32nd in the NFL in scoring in 2016 to first this season Tony Romo Jersey Womens , more than doubling last season’s point production.
Although McVay said he isn’t sure exactly what to do this week, he hopes his players will understand they’re only as good as what happens next year. After outstanding seasons from Todd Gurley, Jared Goff and Aaron Donald, the Rams have pieces in place to do this again and again, McVay believes.
”I think this organization is going in the right direction,” McVay said. ”I think we’ve got a good foundation in place that we can build on, but by no means does that mean that you win games automatically next year. While we did win some games this year, you still have to earn everything.”
The Rams have several decisions to make in the offseason on the fates of free-agent players including cornerback Trumaine Johnson, receiver Sammy Watkins and linebacker Connor Barwin. But after a season that revitalized a franchise and a fan base Josh Gordon Jersey Youth , McVay and the Rams appear to be on the way up.
Here are more things to watch as the Rams move on:
TRU STORY: Six Rams starters will be unrestricted free agents, including three defensive backs: Johnson, Lamarcus Joyner and Nickell Robey-Coleman. Johnson played the last two seasons under the franchise tag, but is likely to get a big contract this offseason as an elite cover cornerback. Los Angeles must navigate potential upheaval in the secondary, perhaps by drafting a cornerback or safety, if it hopes to return with another strong defense.
PAY THE MAN: Donald is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and the Rams seem unlikely to force their All-Pro defensive lineman into another holdout – except that also seemed unlikely this season, when Donald skipped the entirety of training camp and didn’t play in the first regular-season game. Donald is the Rams’ defensive cornerstone, and getting a record-setting deal done will be high on general manager Les Snead’s to-do list Calvin Ridley Falcons Jersey , just as it was last year.
SAMMY’S FUTURE: Watkins occasionally clicked with Goff after arriving during the preseason in a trade with Buffalo, catching 39 passes for 593 yards and eight touchdowns. But Goff clearly had more familiarity with Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp, and it showed. Watkins is a free agent, but could be kept in LA with the franchise tag or the transition tag. Watkins said he would love to stay with the Rams, but added: ”I just know it’s a business. Since I got traded from the Bills, it’s like anything can happen. I didn’t see that coming. I think I played pretty hard this year, and I can’t wait to see what my future holds, here or anywhere else.”
NEW QBs COACH?: McVay all but confirmed that quarterbacks coach Greg Olson is talking about moving to Oakland to work for new coach Jon Gruden, who happens to be McVay’s mentor. If Olson leaves Mike Hughes Youth Jersey , Goff will have his third position coach in three seasons. McVay encourages his assistants to move up in the coaching world, but he also hopes to keep the rest of his staff intact, saying he anticipates no changes other than the possible departure of Olson.
UNSWEET HOME: The Rams’ playoff loss was their fifth in eight games this season at the Coliseum, where the franchise is just 4-11 since returning home from St. Louis in 2016. The Rams also lost their final three home games this year despite increasingly raucous crowds while their improved play grabbed the attention of LA’s long-abandoned football fans. Linebacker Alec Ogletree believes the Rams had a strong us-against-the-world vibe while going 8-1 away from the Coliseum this season, but nobody is quite sure how to replicate it. With two seasons left in the Coliseum before the opening of their lavish Inglewood palace, McVay said the Rams must figure out how to play better at home.

Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts says forward Evan Turner is unable to play in Game 3 of Portland’s first-round playoff series against the New Orleans Pelicans.
Turner had been listed as questionable after injuring a toe on his right foot during Game 2 on Tuesday night. Stotts says he’s unsure about Turner’s prospects for returning later in the series.
Stotts says Maurice Harkless will play more in Turner’s absence Thursday night and that the void will be filled ”by committee.”
The 6-foot-7 Turner started 40 games and averaged 8.2 points during the regular season. He also started the first two games of the playoffs, scoring 13 points in Game 1.
The 6-9 Harkless returned from knee soreness in Game 2 and scored 11 points in 27 minutes.
